Seniors Having Fun on Online Gaming While Reducing Risks for Age Health Issues
While many of the popular board games are still being played by many seniors, online computer gaming is increasing in popularity among the elderly. In fact, according to the Entertainment Software Association, 25% of all gamers are over the age of 50.
What are the benefits of online gaming for seniors?
Online gaming has many benefits for the elderly. Scientific evidence proves that certain types of online game-playing increases brain function and reduces the risk of memory loss, dementia and a variety of vision problems. This is wonderful news for seniors. They can reduce their risk, while having fun!
What kinds of games are seniors playing?
Believe it or not, grandparents could be playing against their grandchildren in Guild Wars! This is a popular game among the younger generation, and more seniors are finding the role playing games interesting and it helps them to feel more connected to the virtual world. Other online role playing games that seniors are playing are Final Fantasy and The Elder Scrolls.
Other online games popular with seniors that can sharpen their minds are:
- Free Cell
- Flip Words
- Text Twist
- Bookworm
- Texas Hold-Em
- Word puzzles
- Canasta
- Gin
- Rummy
- Solitaire
- Bingo
With the increase in the percentage of elderly Internet users, makers of online games have taken the opportunity to create games specifically targeted for seniors. While the makers of these games do not guarantee the health benefits of these online games, they are creating games that include tasks in memory, reading, math and music, which are meant to challenge their brains. These games are being designed to stimulate their brains, specifically the prefrontal cortex that helps apply the knowledge they learn to everyday tasks.
Michael Scanlon, former neuroscience researcher from Stanford University and co-founder of Lumosity, a website designed to improve brain function says that research proves that mental and visual skills have the capability of being sharpened. He states that his site provides "exercises to improve our abilities, while borrowing heavily from the video gaming world to make them fun." This site has a ten minuted daily brain workout designed for older adults that are at risk of Alzheimer's disease or memory impairment.
What are some fun game sites for seniors?
Through visits and online searches, seniors have named the following online game sites as the most popular:
- Pogo
- Slingo
- Gamehouse
Other game sites that seniors are playing:
- zigzone
