Why Online Business Owners Should be Excited for "MoneyBall"

If you have been to the theater lately, you might have seen a preview for the upcoming movie Moneyball, which stars Brad Pitt and is based on the best-selling book by baseball statistics superstar Billy Beane. Regardless of whether you're a fan of either, as the owner of an online business, you should be excited about its release.

Why? Because Moneyball has some pretty great lessons for those of us who rely on the ability to find customers over the Internet in the midst of heavy competition. In fact, here are three of the best:

The numbers don't lie. The whole premise of the movie, and the book before it, is that studying statistics is one of the best ways to build a winning baseball team. It's also a terrific approach to take when optimizing your business website. No matter how much you may love a certain page, or certain product, the numbers never lie – if your customers aren't buying it, then it's time to find another approach.

Success in baseball, and online marketing, is more about efficiency than expense. In the movie, Brad Pitt's character finds a way to field a relatively low-cost team that can compete with the bigger spenders. You can do the same. Even if there are enormous competitors in your industry, there's no reason you can't climb to the top of the search engine rankings, or convert a higher percentage of visitors into buyers, by being smart and intentional. In online marketing, an ounce of knowledge is worth a ton of cash.

Consistency is the key. Any team, or any business, can rack up a few wins in the short term, but it's the groups that do the right things again and again that ultimately come out on top. If you keep improving your pay per click ads, stay at your search engine optimization campaign, or constantly improve your social media marketing plan, for example, you're bound to find success eventually. If you can manage to not be dissuaded when things get tough, there are always new ways to make money and grow your business on the Internet.
