Service Businesses are highly in demand, and the way to go if you need to get up and running fast with a small business of your own when you do not have access to major sources of start-up funding.
Here are some more examples of businesses that require little or no money up front:
Bookkeeping (See Also Virtual Secretary)
Are you good with numbers and organization? If you are,a bookkeeping business may be the perfect solution, especially in this day and age when so much business can be done online from the comfort of your own home. A bookkeeping business is fairly easy to market since a large number of people from all walks of life and even more businesses can use someone to organize their business bookkeeping or keep their books..
The only thing you may need for this type of job is a program(if you are using a computer) and the necessary paperwork. If you have to supply the paperwork, you can charge additionally for this.
You will want to advertise residually at local tax places or office stores. If you want to target businesses you may want to look into local online business directories, and free classified ads. If nothing else, you can put an ad in your local newspaper and go from there.
Home Organization (See also Packing and Unpacking Services)
If you good are at organization, then you may want to consider starting a business organization business. If you ever watch one of the House Shopping TV shows that are so popular these days you will quickly discover that the one thing everyone invariably says is...”We don't have enough storage space, where we live.” Not everyone is fortunate enough to pick up and move to get more closet space, so the next best thing is having some one who is good at organizing come in and organize your house to find that lost space.
You may want to consider supplying the materials needed for organization such as boxes, labels, shelves, etc. If you provide the materials, then you will be able to charge for it. You may also require your clients to buy the materials themselves. Whatever you decide will work.
Another spin on this business is to hold a Garage sale for your clients for either a flat fee, or a portion of the proceeds.
Home organization is best advertised at home stores and in your local paper, and on your free local classified ads website.
Language Translation
If you are fluent in another language, especially one that is heavily represented in the region where you live, you can help break through barriers caused by language differences. Businesses will call you, typically in advance, when they know they will be dealing with someone that speaks a different language. Every once and awhile, you may be called in an emergency situation. The pay depends on the amount of people you will have to translate for, and if you are notified ahead of time or not.
You can call your local government, Development District or Human Resource Agency or go online to the census bureau's website to find out what the ethnic distribution is in your area. Why is this important? In America, business entities that take even $1.00 in Federal Funding must have an Affirmative Action and Title VI plan in place to ensure that they are ready and able to quickly and efficiently serve any foreign-language speaking group above a certain local population density.
If English is your second language, or you just have a liking for foreign languages, you services will come in handy for local businesses that deal with multi-cultures.
If you do not know a foreign language, but you are still interested in language translation as a career or business, then translation books and programs number in the thousands, even for the newest user. It just takes a little time and energy to learn a new language.
There are also free, online document translation services such a Word Lingo to help you translate documents and forms for these same quasi-governmental agencies and political subdivisions that need to meet these foreign language service requirements in order to retain their funding.
Contact local business, doctor’s offices, and government agencies and ask if they are in need of translation services.

It is not wealth one asks for, but just enough to preserve one’s dignity, to work unhampered, to
be generous, frank and independent.
