Virtually Branding Your Business Techniques For Do It Yourself Online Success

Written by: Teresa Bohannon

Article Overview: If you want to succeed in business in today's world one of the first and most vital steps is branding. Of course, this has always been an important factor; but the advent of the Internet has made it perhaps one of the most vital components. Why? Because the Internet has made it fairly easy for anyone to brand their name and their product, which means the competition for recognition has increased 100,000 fold. You can inexpensively build the world's greatest widget and still go broke if no one knows that yours is the one that stands head and shoulders above the crowd in value and quality...and where and how to buy it.

Virtually Branding Your Business Techniques For Do It Yourself Online Success

If you want to succeed in business in today's world one of the first and most vital steps is branding. So you need to understand about branding and how it can make or break your business. You also need to understand exactly what branding is and how it works so you can either do it yourself or know if the person paying to do it for you knows what they are doing. Branding is all about image. Branding is the reason celebrities have publicists and Madison Avenue advertising firms exist. If you have the budget to afford a publicist or a Madison Avenue advertising campaign, you already understand this and pay extremely well for their services. If you do not have that kind of budget then you need to learn the ideas and concepts your self so that you can do it yourself. And this goes back to what I said almost fifteen years ago, “For the little guy in business the Internet is the level playing field you have always dreamed of.” Why? Because online you can compete and effectively claim your brand just by learning the ropes and applying them.

The concept of branding does not just include style, emblems and logos, it also, and more importantly includes the concept of projecting perceived quality. In other words you are creating name recognition for your business combined with a perceived image of outstanding quality, value, reliability, rarity, or desirability. More than just advertising, in branding you are not only letting people know who and what your business or product is; but branding that persona so they will perceive you as the one and only must-have, no substitutions allowed, “genuine” article.

So put in its most simple terms, branding is all about how is different from your competitors. The sole purpose of a brand is to distinguish yourself from your competitors. Once you make this distinguishing impact in their minds then your promotion and advertising campaigns will be much more effective, because when they go to purchase a widget yours is the widget they are going to demand, or at the very least, your widget will be the standard that everyone else has to meet.

So, when all is said and done, the success of your business is often determined by the success of your efforts to brand your business. And in this modern Internet driven world, first and foremost among your branding arsenal will be your website and your online marketing efforts and your ability to draw and drive traffic via search engine optimization. Consumers often trust a brand name or specific corporate image wholeheartedly because they have been taught to psychologically associate reliability or desirability with that particular name which in turn motivates their eventual purchasing decisions.

Of course, you already knew all of this, but what you need to actively understand is that the Internet has made it possible for even the little guy to compete effectively through online branding. Both brick and mortar business and online companies of any size can and do benefit from branding everyday. However, it is equally common for for smaller companies and online businesses to fail totally and completely due to a lack of understanding about the importance of, and factors and steps involved in developing a good brand.

So that is what we are going to talk about here. How to brand your business as inexpensively and as effectively as possible to take full advantage of all the wonderful and often low-cost branding opportunities presented by the Internet.

So to begin with let me give you a couple of preliminary steps.

A. Figure out why your business or product is unique or desirable and make a list of these qualities.

B. Figure out what brand, logo, trademark image or copyrighted phrase best sums up or evokes all of the items on your list.

C. Begin thinking of ways to “consistently” and display your brand to the world through advertising with items such as brochures, newspaper and magazine ads, business cards, t-shirts, and in the case of the Internet informative and unique articles and virtual promotional items such as Ebooks and software which prominently display your brand.

Let me caution you, one of the pitfalls of advertising and/or branding online is, consumer driven reviews. This is a great thing if your product is good, if you do provide quality, in the virtual world satisfied customers can and often will become your greatest assets because they can become a free, virtual sales team for you via testimonials, emails to friends, family and business associates. However, the same is true of a dissatisfied customer—sell a bad or inferior product and the virtual world will quickly know about it. Therefore you need to understand the concept of brand equity. A good brand is a valuable asset, use it well and guard it well. Copyright it, trademark and be prepared to aggressively defend it against anyone who tries to use your successful brand to market their product.

By branding your business effectively and then using the right ideas to motivate and excite consumers you will make people want what you have to offer and put your name at the top of their list when they are ready to buy!
