Strengthen your business boundaries

If you want to have more energy and more confidence it pays to have strong boundaries.

If you say yes to too many requests from other people you could find yourself feeling harassed and even resentful. Not a good combination for your confidence levels! There are several things you can start to do right away which will have a positive impact in this area.

You'll find that a lot of these suggestions are really about controlling your time in one way or another. If we feel in control of how we use our time it helps us to feel more confident that we are in charge of our own lives and businesses.

* Get really clear on your business and personal priorities. Only say yes to requests that fit into your own priorities.

* Have set days and times for client appointments rather that saying yes just because you have a space in your diary. This one action can radically reduce your stress levels and give you clear time to work "on" your business.

* If you work from home ensure that friends, neighbours and family members know your core working hours. Don't fall into the trap of being everyone's errand runner or doing the car pool most days. Remind people that you are running a business and your time is important too.

* Say no to requests politely but firmly - you don't even have to say why. Just practice saying something like: "That won't work for me."

* Buy yourself time by not saying yes to requests when you are first asked. Say you'll get back to the person when you've checked your diary. This gives you breathing space to make a considered decision. We all love to be helpful and can find ourselves saying yes and regretting it later.

* Remember you don't have to answer the door or the telephone if you are busy.

* Get help in the form of a cleaner, baby sitter, order groceries on line etc.

Think about what bothers you in this area. Is there something that others take for granted that is bugging you? Is there a negative friend who drains you every time they phone? Are you doing most of the housework and cooking? Are you the one who always seems to be picked for committees? Make a list.

Now go through your list item by item and decide what you can do differently in future to strengthen your boundaries. Pick something easier to start with as this will give you the confidence to work up to the more challenging items. Not everyone will be happy with your new way of doing things, but trust me, the freed up time and energy will be well worth it!

Re: How long can you stay away from your Computer? Re: How long can you stay away from your Computer? - I LOVE my computer too. I realized how much the other day when I drove off from a meeting with it on top of the truck of my car. I about had a heart attack - but thankfully my spoiler saved it from being in pieces on the 401. ;0) As long as its a healthy LOVE and its not taking too much away from the rest of your life. I'd ask your wife to help you set some boundaries. ;0) good luck
Scoping Your Articles for Ghostwriters Scoping Your Articles for Ghostwriters - Martin, can you advise your process for scoping out the work for article writing. specifically, 1. How do you scope the boundaries of the article? (is it by the Keywords?) 2. How many keywords do you provide to the ghostwriter for an article of a certain size? 3. How do you measure quality? (is it just your impression that the article is good)? 4. Who owns the article? 5. How do you know that this article is not published elsewhere on the Internet? Thanks
Re: Dropped Out Of School To Startup! Re: Dropped Out Of School To Startup! - I don't know how it goes in other countries, but here we have so many "student right" but they forget all the other rules students have to follow. They do think they are smarter than their teachers, there is no respect to a teacher, or any adult. I am working with kids at the ages of 12-18, what amaze me the most is the fact they have no boundaries, and they don't know the difference between right and wrong, and the teachers, can't do their job, to teach and educate, because they can't tell the students anythings, because it hurt their feelings. What about our feelings?
Re: Too Successful for Marriage? Re: Too Successful for Marriage? - [quote="TheRainmaker":3mdf3dnc]Hey Everyone! This is one of my favourite topics so forgive me if I rant... There is a huge piece missing in all of these discussions and that is, what are the men doing/going to do differently? The focus is always on the women and how we have created this but in reality in the men who have become obsessively insecure about 'their' roles in the relationship, etc. Perhaps if there were more education or relationship coaching for men, it would help. Right now, the majority of information is focussed on the women. Men clearly dont know what is 'expected' of them anymore. These arent our fathers times. There was an article in Men's Health last year which was actually promoting the fact that men can relax a bit and be 'taken care' of by their successful wives and girlfriends. Give me a break - if I was single and I wanted to take care of something, or some-one it would be my business or my dog. Men these days seem to have lost all THEIR Ambition and drive. If they, the men, could catch up with the women in self esteem, empowerment etc., we'd all be much better off. I think women, while wanting a relationship, are doing the right thing in remaining single until they find a confident and self secure partner. I dont think women are looking to be the BREADWINNER all the time, but we shouldnt get punished by it. J[/quote:3mdf3dnc] Hi Jude, it's good to hear your take on this one. I think we need to look at ourselves first, but then the next step is to look at how we are "being" with the men in our lives. Are we setting up boundaries and educating them on how to treat us properly? We can't change the men, but we CAN change how we deal with them. I do know that some gentle persistence can help... my husband has learned how to have personal growth discussions with me on subjects that would have had him running the other direction a 100 miles an hour in the past! What's the secret? I've modelled to him what personal development does. He might not like that my boundaries aren't easy to push over anymore, but it made him sit up and take note. After some time, he started asking more questions. Since most men aren't into personal development, we can certainly train them how to be with us in the areas that matter most. If I were single and dating someone who wasn't willing to compromise or see me as an equal partner, I wouldn't consider that person marriage material anyway. (Fortunately, there really are some good guys still out there.) Notice I said, "equal" partner above. Some women I know swing into the whole "control" factor and disrespect the man as well. That's also a recipe for disaster. She shouldn't be surprised if she can't find a partner when she's not willing to be a true partner herself. Take care, Tami
Re: How do you refocus on work after vacation? Re: How do you refocus on work after vacation? - I got back from vacation about a month ago. Boy, it really interfered with my work in the first week especially, because I had less of a tolerance for setbacks. But the silver lining was that it taught me quickly where I needed to set more boundaries around my work, so that my time wasn't being wasted (vacation made me really aware of how I was spending my time). Reducing time spent writing and responding to emails was one new habit that my vacation helped me develop. I think that you can use almost any negative side-effect of returning back from vacation and turn it into something positive, if you think creatively about the situation.
