Coping With Job Loss

We’ll all be retiring eventually, but what if you lose your job before then? What if your company is down-sizing because of the economy and your specific job causes you to be laid off? What do you do?

Recognize that you are experiencing the loss of a way of life and the security it provided. You may feel numb and be in disbelief, but it is important to feel your feelings, as with any loss, because it is all part of the healing process. Feelings of frustration and helplessness are common, since the situation was not initiated by you.

Here are some things you can do to make the transition easier:

1. Realize that to return to the quality of life you had before, you have to make changes. This means you must focus on the future and make a personal business plan you can follow.

2. Identify your skills, interests and abilities. Perhaps this will enable you to find a new career or direction that will be even more fulfilling than the one you had before. Look into distance learning programs to hone your skills or to learn some new ones. Don’t let procrastination sabotage your incentive to find or create new work.

3. Develop your support system or networking system, letting everyone know that you are looking for a job.

4. Talk things over with someone you trust. This helps you realize the reality of the situation, and offers input into things you can do or things you are good at. Join a support group to help you manage your feelings so they don’t control you. Understand what you are going through so you can move through the grieving process easier.

Coping with job loss is devastating at any age, but even more so when you are older. It is especially compounded when you are close to retirement, since it is a forced departure. You have a choice, however. As with any loss, you can stay fixated at the same point or choose to move on.

Learn to take care of yourself and you’ll be renewed with hope and energy. What seems to be a terrible setback, financially and emotionally, can actually be a catalyst for a hopeful new future and a new beginning.

Re Design Re Design - Hi tandrysiak, It has been proven, people who make quick decision tend to be more successful. I myself know, that delayed actions are the reason for not performing to the maximum. I encourage you to let us know your website and some work you have done, so that you have a chance to solve someone's problem. Delayed Action = Delayed success = Loss of income. If fear is the reason, do not worry. I don't know anybody who has never suffered with that. Just do it afraid. Kindest regards Beat "Unlock People's Potentials!"
Prequalify an existing business Prequalify an existing business - Getting pre-qualified for financing is a very important step in due diligence when purchasing or starting up a business. But how many people know that also prequalifying an already existing business (an aquisition) that you plan to purchase is equally as important? I cannot even begin to tell you how many people either not seeking a bank loan or can't get one because the bank thinks the risk is too high so they end up financing the business via personal means and commit financial suicide each year because they purchased a business that is doing poorly. When going to a bank, they want to review a good business plan and the business tax returns to ensure they are not taking on a losing business deal. I've heard of people who lost life savings, retirement funds, took out a 2nd mortgage or Home Equity line of credit or borrowed money from frends and family to buy a business that was losing money. They either do not know any better or they thought they can turn the losing business around. The risk of assuming you can turn a business around is too high and there isn't a lender out there who will finance that for you, so why would you? Here's some tips- Stay clear of business owners not willing to release official business financials such as tax returns. Be wary of those who say their business is actually doing well, but then say their tax returns do not reflect that information because they are not claiming all their income. A lot of business owners will show a balance sheet or monthly or yearlyProfit & Loss statements to the prospective buyer (that anyone can create on a computer) which means the documentation can be false. Speak to a professional and have a professional look over the business tax returns, whether or not you plan on doing a bank loan. Make sure that what you are getting into is a good deal from the get go.
