An Attitude of Gratitude for Your Business
An attitude of gratitude in your business world means being grateful for what you are doing, for the vision of doing it, for the people who are doing it with you, and for the people who are buying your product or service. Look forward to getting up in the morning to do what you love doing. This is my first affirmation every morning: “Today I am grateful for the opportunity to empower women.”
If you aren’t grateful for what you do, you may be holding yourself back. Perhaps you just haven’t asked yourself the right questions, or haven’t taken the actions required to fulfill your dreams. Having a goal is not about thinking “I’ll be grateful, when I reach it,” ...it’s about being grateful every step of the way. This attitude helps you to overcome challenges and difficulties and to enjoy the rewards.
Those people that go to work and can’t see how their work is going to help them fulfill their goals and live accordingly to their highest values, are never going to be grateful for what they have. They’ll live in the tormenting mind-set of “I Want...” - I want more money, a bigger house, a better car, more clothes, longer vacations, on and on. Eventually, this attitude actually costs them more - more of their time, energy, health, wealth and happiness.
Every person I meet wants to enjoy their work, learn new information and spend time doing things that are important to them. It’s human nature. Whenever we have to do something that we don’t like doing, or have to learn something we don’t want to learn, we find the experience frustrating and annoying. There is a way to turn such an unpleasant experience into a pleasant one, and that is by learning to ask the right questions. Here are some examples:
How is this experience going to help me to fulfill my goals?
What will help me get through this situation?
What is one high priority action that can help me achieve my task today?
Then, start listening! The answers will come and, suddenly, you will find yourself enjoying what you are doing! The aim is to make your vocation as enjoyable as your vacation; this is the key to having gratitude for your business.
I have designed a format that I use in coaching sessions. It is a series of questions to have the client write down their job description and define what they do in detail. It also asks them to write down a list of their values - things that are meaningful in their life. Then, they are asked to write down how they think their job will help them realise their goals. If they can’t answer that, then they are not going to be happy doing that job.
They have to answer thirty questions but during and after the session they can truly see the connection between the two - their mind-set has changed and they are grateful. In addition, their productivity, motivation, satisfaction and inspiration increase and they get much more out of every day life!
This enlightening exercise is worth doing even if you already enjoy what you do. If you don’t yet know what you’d like to do or don’t have the strategies to do what you’d like to do... it can work wonders! Keep asking questions until you get a clear perspective. A regular questioning session will allow you to have more vitality and energy and you won't be weighed down doing a job you don’t like. It also frees you to pursue your potential.
When you decide on a dream you would like to achieve, write, sketch or draw your vision and a basic time-line to ensure you keep moving towards it. Never forget to appreciate the unique opportunity the universe has given you.
Adopt an attitude of gratitude for your business works wonders - whether you love what you’re doing or learning to love what you do!
