Accentuate the Positive: What’s Already Working in Your Life?

Written by: Ruth Hegarty

Article Overview: In this article, rather than add to your "to do" list with more ways to improve your current situation, I thought I'd take a different approach that is ultimately simpler, more effective and much more enjoyable. I ask you instead: What is already working well in your life? Even if you feel you have a long way to go before your life is exactly how you want it, I invite you to take a look around at what you already have and do that is perfect or near perfect for you right now.

Accentuate the Positive: What’s Already Working in Your Life?

"What you get by reaching your destination is not nearly as important as what you will become by reaching your destination." - Zig Ziglar

In this article, rather than add to your "to do" list with more ways to improve your current situation, I thought I'd take a different approach that is ultimately simpler, more effective and much more enjoyable. I ask you instead: What is already working well in your life? Even if you feel you have a long way to go before your life is exactly how you want it, I invite you to take a look around at what you already have and do that is perfect or near perfect for you right now.

Do you love where you live? Even if the answer isn't an absolute YES, think about what you do like. Do you like the street you live on? Your yard? Your living room? Bathtub? The colors of your walls? Do you have the perfect pet for you? The perfect partner? Child? Parent? Do you love your clothes or even one particular outfit? Is there an activity you engage in that you love, the kind that causes you to lose track of time when you are in the midst of that activity?

Even if, after looking around, you can only find one thing in your life that you feel is working for you right now, you can still benefit from this exercise. After identifying what is perfect, ask yourself: Why? What about that person, item, color, feeling is perfect? How does it make you feel? What does it tell you about yourself? You can choose to write down your answers or just let them marinate in the back of your mind for a while. Ultimately, you will have revealed to yourself some of the criteria you have for your perfect life. All from just looking around and seeing what is working for you so well today.

After you know what is already working, and why it is perfect for you, you can use that information to attract more greatness into your life. Start discarding the things and behaviors that didn't make it onto your “working well” list in order to free up the space and energy you need to add more of what will make life wonderful for you. You will see how, bit by bit, you are shifting the balance from only a few really great people, places and things in your life to the majority of what surrounds you being perfect for you.

Start basing the choices you make on whether or not something is the best way it could be for you vs. the way you think it “should” or “must” be. Before you know it you will have far more perfect in your life than imperfect. And all of this will happen simply because you took a few quiet and enjoyable moments one day to consider what is working well in your life already.

I’d love to see your “what’s working great for me” list! Email it to me at ruth@coachruth.com for feedback and support.

Re: What is Your Favorite Thing About Owning A Business? Re: What is Your Favorite Thing About Owning A Business? - [quote="freddyb45":1t3lpfi8]For me it's the fact that all the time and effort you put in is worth a lot more, due to it making you "business" more profitable. Working for yourself is also a positive, although employing people you can trust is quite different.[/quote:1t3lpfi8] I like this idea. Working for yourself means you are investing in your own future, not someone else's, although there is value in working for someone else first to gain experience and confidence. Working for yourself does not automatically mean success, fame and fortune. For most entrepreneurs, it takes much work and dedication to get to the point of financial success and comfort - sometimes years. But the benefit is, again, you know you are investing in yourself and building equity for your own future. GT :-]
