New Year Resolutions - Who Do You Want to Be?
As another year closes and a new one begins, people all over the world are setting themselves one or more New Year resolutions. Almost all of these resolutions are about what we want to do in the new year - lose weight, get fit, make money, give-up smoking, build a new home, find a new love, leave an old one etc.
They are all based on the premise of doing, having or being - which is the way most of us run our lives. We want to do something (lose weight) to have something (trim body) so we can be a certain way (happy or desirable or....fill in the blank). What we're looking for is how we perceive that achieving this goal will make us feel or who it will help us become. We think that the results of the 'doing' will give us something we don't already have: happiness, respect, love or status.
What if you could have that feeling and be that person ahead of time?
Wayne Dyer says we are human beings not human doings. When we approach life, however, with the 'do, have, be, model of the world', we are human doings not human beings. It's a cycle many of us get caught up in. Wouldn't it be great to know how to move from human doing-ness to human being-ness and in the process to be, do and have everything we ever wanted?
What if we decided to ask ourselves a different question this new year, rather than what do I want to have or do or achieve this year, ask who do I want to be? I bet you find yourself getting some very different answers.
So if you said you wanted to, be a loving soul mate rather than improve my relationship, be outrageously healthy rather than lose weight or get fit, be a non-smoker rather than give up smoking, be happy, joyful, live in the moment, energetic, enthusiastic, I am sure you're starting to get the picture.
Do you think this would change your focus, your perspective and your life experience? You bet it would! You see, most of us are putting off living a full life until another time - a time when we do all the things we need to do, to have all the things we want to have, so then we can be who we think the doing and having will create. In fact, what we do is put off truly living the life we deserve.
Changing the way you think about yourself can move you from feeling deprived 'oh I can't have that cigarette', or finding fault 'if only my partner would take out the garbage then I would be more loving' or ' exercising is no fun or too hard' to being the person you wish to become ahead of time. You can, then, ask yourself different questions: What would an outrageously healthy person, loving soul mate or non-smoker choose to do right now? How would they think? What choices would they make?
Would a healthy person see exercise as fun or a chore? Would a non-smoker consider having a cigarette, would a loving soul mate berate their significant other or look for the best in them? How would this change your view and more importantly your experience of life?
Decide this new year who you want to be and start thinking and behaving like that person TODAY! Success is something you attract by virtue of the person you become.
Outrageously Healthy Tips:
Ask yourself who do you want to be? My example is I want to be an Outrageously Healthy Leader, so my questions to myself are: Who am I showing up as in my life? What is the experience I want to have? How would an outrageously healthy leader be in this situation? I then make my choices accordingly!
Create your vision of the person you want to be, maybe even create a vision board or book, keep a journal and celebrate your progress. If you have a setback or two along the way that's fine, the road to success is not straight through from A to B, it takes twists and turns along the way so you can gain new insights and learn new lessons so you can be the idea person - YOU! If you find yourself distracted or off course, just ask yourself some great questions and move forward.
Learn to ask great questions. I like to have a list of questions I ask myself each morning when I am getting ready for my day. I find it a great way to set myself up for the day. It can also be helpful to get refocused during your day or even as an end of day ritual. Some questions I use include;, What am I grateful for right now? Who do I love? And who loves me? Who do I want to be today? How can I have even more fun today?
What am I excited about in my life right now? What did I enjoy today? What did I learn today?
What made me smile today? This is just a beginning; you will be able to create your own list of great questions.
If you find it a little difficult to start with just ask yourself what could I be grateful for or happy about and so on. Remember your unconscious mind will supply you with the answers to any questions you ask, so why not make them great questions.
Once you decide who you want to be you'll find yourself starting to act and think like that person. Rather than do, do, do, turn it around, decide who you want to be, and let that be your guide.
