Techniques to Increase Conversions

You may know that conversions are important for the success of an online business, but do you know the exact definition of a conversion? In layman's terms, conversions occur anytime someone visiting your website completes an action (also known as answering a call to action) such as posting on an online message board, filling out a feedback form or carrying out a purchasing transaction. Conversions are important because they foster a sense of commitment, community and loyalty towards your website. It suggests a successful relationship between your company and its customers. Better understand the techniques behind conversion through this quick tutorial.

Remember the importance of first time impressions. If a potential customer does not feel comfortable on your site, they will not only leave, they will take their conversions with them. Therefore it is imperative that you pay special attention to the design of your website. Users should be able to easily maneuver their way through your site, all the while admiring the sleek graphics and stylish design. Such an inviting scene relaxes an online user, thus making them more open and willing to complete a conversion.

Conversions can be found in the form of online message boards. In fact, anytime a registered user posts on your forum, they have completed a conversion. But how exactly do you convince visitors to sign up for the discussion board? For starters, you need to make certain you foster a strong sense of community amongst your message board members. You can do so by hosting introductions or off-topic forum subheadings, granting users the opportunity to get to know each other on a more personal basis. Close knit relationships found on online forums tend to lead to loyal customers who in turn are more likely to complete conversions in the future.

Convince visitors to sign up for your website's newsletter campaign or RSS feed, both of which are calls to action. You can encourage your customers to enroll in such offers by ensuring that your newsletter will contain exclusive information regarding your online business. It is vitally important however that you remember not to require too much information during the sign up process as it can turn visitors and conversions away.

I have one question, though. How would one implement Session IDs for a URL, and what benefit would come from doing so?

The search engines don't pay much attention to keyword metatags, and using javascript/flash just means the search engines can't "read" it (so if your menu is javascript, for instance, the search engine won't see any keywords you might have in there.)
