And Why Don't YOU Use Video?
Here are 5 traps that stopped me from using videos on my blog [especially videos with me in them] but I overcame some...
Trap 1 - Video is much too
complicated
This is the first trap I
overcame. Video can be complicated
- but it need not be.
I used to work at a cable access
station and had to learn to use all sorts of complicated equipment and programs
to upload a video, digitize it and then edit it. It took hours to do and sometimes more hours than I liked.
Now I have 2 cameras that take
video and I use the small less expensive digital one as that video is easier to upload
to my computer and all I then need to do is some quick editing on imovie. The other is a film camera and that
makes for many extra uploading steps - so I use that one more sparingly now.
But still - I don’t do any “me”
videos for my blogs - why?
Trap 2 - Editing takes so long
Yes it does – or can. But once I got past the original
learning curve on transitions and other things it actually became fun playing
with editing. And I have edited a
few short videos on outdoor topics.
[And imovie makes editing so
much faster than the FinalCut program I also own.]
Trap 3 - I don’t have good
lighting
Even here in a Pacific Northwest
winter, we do get some sunlight – a great source of lighting. Also my cameras are quite portable;
they can go outside or to a room where I can use the sunlight while in the
house/office.
But I still don’t do many “me”
videos for my blogs – why?
Trap 4 - My office or house is a
mess and there is no other place to shoot what I want.
This trap has an easy solution.
Clean my office/house or live with the mess like I do all year long
anyway. It’s ME!
But the final trap? The real reason I don’t do the
me-on-camera-videos for my blogs?
Trap 5 – I don’t look “good”
I need a haircut, I need new
glasses or new contacts and, and, and....
The fact is I almost always need
a haircut – it grows quickly and I just am not “into” getting it cut. But still – these are not the real
reasons behind this excuse.
I am scared. Me, who can get up and speak in front
of a large audience or even be live on TV – but a self-made “me” video? That scares me. It somehow makes it more me.
The solution is to ask myself
who really cares? And the answer
is probably just me. It’s in my
head and is a trap I need to “get over it.”
I’m still working on this one by
telling myself that I am me and need to recognize that most readers of my blogs
would be happy to see “me” – messy office and all.
What stops you?
