Do We All Need Work Schedules for Productivity?

Are you someone who makes to-do lists?

Are your lists still undone at the end of the day, week, or even month?

How about those New Year resolutions last January 1? Kept those?

Do you block out a schedule of time to “do” things and then spend your time on a task not on your list?

If you said “no” to the 2nd or 4th question or “yes” to the 3rd - this article is NOT for you...But if you made those lists, schedules and resolutions and did not follow through – please read on.

Welcome to the “I can’t stay scheduled crowd.” You are in good company. Your mind is not like everyone else’s; so don’t try to be like everyone else.

When I tell myself it is time to do something - a little switch in my head says – uh maybe not – wait til you feel more inclined. Sometimes I even hear a loud NO!

The problem, if it really is a problem, is that my mind has its own inclinations as to what it might want to do – and it runs through scenarios like:

take a walk?

read?

hang out on Twitter?

take pictures?

finish videos?

write articles?

work on the e-book?

This used to concern me and absolutely annoyed some friends. I could not do what was on my schedule and I felt like something was wrong with me because unfinished tasks are supposed to haunt a person [Zeigarnik effect] and only a few of mine did. Completing a whole scheduled list of tasks by crossing them off was supposed to make one feel successful or something. In fact, forcing myself to finish what was on a schedule made me feel awful and took a toll on my productivity overall.

I finally figured out that my mind is not linear. It scans the environment including itself and goes off on its own streaks. I follow along, as it can be sort of fun. And, do you know what? When I let my mind do its own thing –more seems to get done. And what I wind up completing is infinitely better than what I started out thinking I was going to do.

It’s taken me a long lifetime to figure this out and accept that I am different. Since I made this major mental shift I’m no longer fighting internal mental battles about schedules and I have been much more productive.

I do not need a schedule to be productive and maybe you do not need a schedule to be productive either.

It’s something to think about.

Re: How many vacation and sick days do you give yourself? Re: How many vacation and sick days do you give yourself? - I don't give myself a set amount of days off. If I'm sick then I don't work. If I want to take a vacation, I just do it. If I have something more important to do than work, I do it. If I just don't feel like working, I don't. Yes, it hurts productivity but that doesn't bother me. A big part of the reason I am an internet marketer is so I can have the freedom to do things like that. I don't want to limit myself to a certain number of days off. That would feel too much like a regular job. There are also plenty of weekends and holidays that I work. It just depends on whether or not I am doing anything else. Basically I try to at least do a little work every day but if I don't then I don't. No big deal.

Re: Question of the Week: What's your favorite productivity tool Re: Question of the Week: What's your favorite productivity tool - I've heard of it - a few bloggers I follow have mentioned it - but I haven't applied it religiously. The core of the message is to block out time that you can get to work without being interrupted. I'll divide my day into 90 minute chunks to focus on key tasks and I've found it to be a very effective way to boost my productivity. If you do decide to use it, let us know the results David!
Worklife Balace Worklife Balace - To create balance you have to set priorities and be realistic. When I first started my business I was also working. I worked almost everynight until 3 or 4 am on my business because I just couldn't get any work done until my nocturnal daughter went to sleep by 11:30 pm. After doing this for two years I got so burned out that my productivity and the passion I had for my business plummeted. I also realized I had been doing nothing for me such as exercise. So I made a decision to slow it down a bit. Things will get done that need to get done. It just may take a little while longer. Now me and my family are happier and I am healthier with a lot more energy since adding exercise to my routine and reducing stress. I also use spending time with my family/friends as incentive to get things done. I will work first thing in the morning for a designated period of time (including weekends) and then have the rest of the day free (both mentally and physically). It takes work to consciously be in the moment but you have to take the time to get out of your work headspace so you can come back to it thinking clearly and with more creativity.
