Goals for 2010
With the end of the year past, it has come to the time when we begin to
reevaluate our lives. This is a time of both retrospect and also a time of
looking forward – we think back to our experiences in the past year and
consider the changes we would like to implement for ourselves and our families.
This is an excellent goal-setting time because the ushering in of a New Year
gives us the motivation to improve our lives and the lives of those we love.
Many of the goals we set are almost universal in that they are common and
can easily apply to many people in different walks of life. A list of the top
10 goals is detailed below. These can easily follow the Pareto principle of
80/20, so if you have accomplished 80% (or in this case eight) of these goals,
you have done well for yourself. The important thing to remember is that change
takes time. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you have difficulty reaching your
goals. Approach it one step at a time and you will be amazed at what you can
accomplish.
Top Ten Personal Goals for 2010:
1. Balancing work / family time: This one can be difficult. The important
thing to remember is that when extra time is given to one area, it will be
sacrificed from another. And nothing says “I love you” more effectively to your
family than spending some quality time with them.
2. Finding a healthy way to manage stress: Stress is how our bodies react to
outside stimuli. That being said, we can control our reaction to unfavorable
circumstances. The most important aspect is to find something that relaxes you.
Many people find that yoga and meditation help tremendously. Find what makes
you happy and try to focus on that when times get tough.
3. Exceeding your sales / call quota at work: If you are aiming to achieve a
certain amount of phone calls or sales at work, try to push the bar even
higher. Making goals that fit into realistic expectations helps improve self
esteem when you exceed what you thought was once difficult to achieve.
4. Making time for exercise: Everyone needs exercise to maintain good
health. Find something that you love doing that will increase your heart rate
for 30 minutes a day, three times a week. Not only will your body benefit, but
your mind will too.
5. Planning date nights with your partner: Nothing will show your
significant other that you value and appreciate them more than spending some
time together with them. Book a babysitter if there are kids involved and make
time for just the two of you.
6. Breaking destructive habits: This is a good time of year to focus on
things that take away from one’s health. Smoking, excessive drinking or any
type of recreational drug use should be stopped.
7. Car Pooling. As an example carpooling to work: Taking advantage of
a carpool has its benefits. You can save money on tolls and gas, and you can
escape the stress and aggravation of sitting in traffic.
8. Recycling more: If you already recycle, this is the perfect time to bring
it up a notch. Find out where you can drop off your old computers, batteries
and paint cans. If you don’t already recycle, now is an excellent time to
start.
9. De-cluttering your home: There can be quite a few spots in a home where
clutter can surface. Even if the visible areas of a home are immaculate,
closets, attics and basements can tell a much different story. Purge your home
of anything you no longer wear or use.
10. Donating clothes or other household items: Many homes are filled with
clothes that will never be worn again, or items that will never be used.
Filling up a box of these items and dropping them off at the local shelter that
could use them is an ideal way of de-cluttering your house.
Re-evalaute your goals every quarter, to see if you are staying track and
reward yourself when you feel that you have completed one of your goals.
