About Me - What's In An Online Sale? Trust

Written by: Shanni Einer

Article Overview: The one thing that makes a big make it or break it difference to me in a site online is about me. What's in a site, what's in a sale. Its about building trust between a business and its clients/customer. Without this core value, you have nothing to grow on.

About Me - What's In An Online Sale? Trust

I do not completely practice what I preach on all of my sites in the interest of time, but I try to do so whenever possible.

What am I talking about? Oh not, its not about what I'm talking about, its what you're talking about. One of the first things I want to share here is something of interest to me in deciding whether to shop online at your site or sign up for the service you are referring me to. Its you, plain and simple.

See, I'm not naive, I won't jump at the first thing you show me especially if you're trying to sell to me right of the bat. Even with love at first site, we don't instantly marry the person we meet right then - it never happens. You don't meet someone and immediately drop all your plans to take a drive to the nearest church or courthouse to marry them. Same thing with online sales - it rarely ever happens. People love to shop around and its usually what people do to find exactly what they're looking for. What makes a difference to me is a profile - whether its called Our Story, Our History, About Us, About Our Company, About Me, About "companysite.com", why we're different, how we serve you etc. The list goes on and on.

See, the sale isn't about you - its about me, what I want, what I need. What do I need? I often need pre-sales contact - when deciding whether to buy from a site or sign up for a service, I look for a way to contact the site owner - its a security thing, its my money - its valued, I need to protect it because if I lose this money because I didn't do my homework and contact you first. it costs not only me, but my family too. I need to know that I'm going to be respected enough as a customer/client whether I pay you or not to be treated with personal respect and not just as another customer. I need that, I Need That, I NEED THAT.

If I need to know how quickly I can expect to know how quickly I can expect a refund should I not be satisfied with your product so I can get what I need elsewhere if I'm in a hurry yet need to receive what I'm buying from you quickly. If I don't have time to do it right in the first place, will I have time to do it over? No. I need to know that you can quickly help because I have a problem that I know you didn't cause, but I certainly know I can't afford another mistake nor to waste any more time.

I need to know that you care. I need to know you. I need to trust you, I need to know that I can go to you in the future. I need a face behind your site, not just a business name. You want my business? Then be of service, let me know you care.

I also love getting to know you, what inspired your site? I love that, personally I do. If you run a kids craft site, I love to see pictures of you and your kids crafting a new delight. If you love to cook, I'd love to see the finished product of recipe you're offering even if you're offering it for free.

An about page with a link to a contact page can accomplish this. This is something that is make it or break it in online sales & referrals. I am your average customer most likely to be repeat customer. I know that I can get what you're offering elsewhere so how do I decide to get what you're offering? Your about page.

Offer one on your website or a brief description. Build a business on trust & positive values, your clients truly do expect the same from you. If you can deliver at least that much and care enough to introduce yourself to your audience before your pitch, then you've got a customer, and most likely a friend, for life. In this world, that's hard to find.

Re: Kevin's Case Study #11 - A New Forum Category? - [quote:31qpen1j]This is just my opinion, but I consider the prospective categories, Online Marketing, Internet Marketing and Online Promotion, as being pretty much one and the same - just different words that different people use.[/quote:31qpen1j] I completely agree! Those are all just "internet marketing" as far as I am concerned. And I normally would have voted for internet marketing, however I chose social media marketing simply because there are more than enough IM forums out there already.
