Home Stagers: Compete With Virtual Staging and Fire Up Your Marketing!

There was a time not so long ago, when home stagers roamed freely about the real estate landscape, turning empty houses into gold to the roar of cheering home sellers. Today, many of these stagers have lived successfully ever after, but changes in the real estate and staging industry have complicated things on the road to success.

One of the newest entries into the staging industry that is impacting how we do business, is "virtual staging." Almost overnight a brilliant idea blossomed into a dynamic industry, carving out a piece of the industry market-share. Companies and consultants are springing up to offer computer-generated furnishings to vacant listings, for less than a home could be furnished for staging. Virtual Staging was an inevitable change as technology improved, and as more and more homes are being sold vacant, and by banks and investors.
As a stager, it would be easy to accept that Virtual Staging is going to splinter your market. Instead, you can see it as a marketing gift! I have always believed that our best marketing and our clearest messages come when we are presented with something that allows us to craft our marketing message with crystal clarity.
So, how can competing with Virtual Staging actually help your business?
By studying what your competition IS, you can better position yourself by what you are NOT. Let me explain: Let's say you own a bakery. You bake delicious cakes, cookies, pastries, and some breads. A new business goes in across the street from you and they sell bread -- really, really, good bread. They also sell it for less than you do.
Okay, what is your strategy to compete with the new bread store?
You don't compete. You strategize. Seeing the bread store doing well right across the street is a marketing gift. Their bread is wonderful and provides what customers want, and the price is lower than yours because they produce bread in volume. If you're a savvy marketer, the presence of the bread baker fires you up to identify your niche, focus on what you do the best, and find ways to share in the bread baker's success with all of those new customers in the neighborhood.
Well, how can you relate the bakery story to your staging business?
Research the competitions (virtual staging companies) to identify these things:

1. Target Market

2. Benefits to Client

3. What they offer that you can't.

4. What you offer that they can't.

Use that knowledge to create a compelling marketing message that focuses on what only a real-life stager can provide to their clients. Learn all about virtual staging so that you can explain to potential clients the benefits of working with you. The key to thriving in this new reality is not in selling against anything else, but in selling for you. A competitor only serves to strengthen our brand, and that is a gift.

Compete vs. Alexa Compete vs. Alexa - Thanks for the tip Clint. I checked out what Compete thought of EvanCarmichael.com and it says the top keywords that drive traffic to my site are: #1 mary kay - estee lauder - leadership #2 chris gardner, quotes by #3 gardner rich investment firm While I might rank for these keywords they are far from the top referring keywords. It looks like nobody has figured out the holy grail. I wonder how much ISPs are actually willing to share their data with Compete and other similar services. I would consider moving my hosting if I knew my ISP was sharing information about my website with outside organizations.
