Develop The Relationship With Your List - Be A Better Communicator

Communicating successfully with your list, no matter the size, is the key doing business online. Managing subscriptions and unsubscriptions, checking bounce rates, being able to monitor open and click through rates are also as important.

If you sell things on EBay, what about being able to let previous purchasers know about new additions to your product range, sales or provide general information updates? EBay itself does not allow this to happen, but what if you had the ability to ask your EBay purchasers if they would like further updates, and then get them to subscribe to your newsletter?

The question is how to achieve all of this easily and effectively. As I have developed my business, I spent a long time looking at and trying different options, many of which ended up costing me money and gave me no benefit at all.

When I started looking, I had heard about autoresponders however, the information on autoresponders, what they truly did and how they could help my business was pretty light on and I was incredibly overwhelmed by the learning curve. It took me months to decide to try a managed autoresponder - once I did, I was hooked. I'm not sure how I survived without it.

Proper use of a good autoresponder is like your golden goose: the marketing tool that will sell your product far more effectively than any other form of advertising. Few sales are made by impulse buyers, particularly on the internet. Many sales are made after the 7th exposure, so being able to get your message out repeatedly to people who are already interested in what you have to offer, will result in a larger sales response.

Through my investigations, I tried a "home run" autoresponder and finally decided to use a managed system.

What was I looking for in an autoresponder? When I first started looking, I had the following priorities:

1. Management of "Opt-In" and "Opt-Out" subscribers was paramount.

2. Reliability was paramount - the system had to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

3. The ability to send once off messages to individual lists (Broadcast function)

4. The ability to use a follow-up sequence to individual lists (Follow-Up function)

As I investigated, this list grew to include:

1. Management of separate lists, to cater for the different niches became important.

2. The ability to split test campaigns within a list

3. The ability to send the same message to multiple lists.

My "home run" system was quite good. It allowed me to manage opt-ins and opt-outs, in a very basic manner, gave me broadcast and follow up capabilities but was not particularly reliable. I found that the machine I was running the system on failed as often as not and required manual intervention. By operating my own system, I was also utilising my ISP mail relays and was continually having mail problems as my ISP turned off mail services due to "spamming" issues.

I decided to use a managed Autoresponder service because they took the issues of reliability out of the picture and the service I finally chose also allowed me to monitor the "spam" ratings of my individual emails.

I looked at and test drove several commercial grade autoresponders and settled on one due to a combination of functionality and price.

Moving to a managed Autoresponder was one of the best things I ever did. I have increased my list size by at least 10 times in about half the time of running my own and am now able to monitor my campaigns by click through rates, open rates and unsubscribe rates for different messages. This funcitonality is incredibly powerful.

Is a managed autoresponder, or email marketing tool, the best solution for your business? The best way to find out, is to ensure you document your MUST HAVEs and your nice to haves and test drive everything you can, before you commit to anything!

Re: How do you make the most of your day? Re: How do you make the most of your day? - Here are a couple things I do to get lots done. First, I work from a weekly To Do List (although I should call it an Action List) rather than a daily list. Each item on the list must be one specific action required to move one step closer to accomplishing or finishing something. It's similar to what Robert Alan talks about. Each day I prioritize 3 actions that must be completed before the end of the day. I fully commit to those actions. Second, when I really need to focus on something to get the most done possible I work in timed 50 minute increments. That may sound a little loopy but it really works for me plus I feel refreshed working that way. So I literally have a little timer on my desktop that I set to count down from 50 minutes to zero. During that 50 minutes I work without interruption. When the timer goes off I stop whatever I'm doing and take a 10 minute break. You can get an incredible amount of work done working that way without feeling like you're working hard. I don't schedule 8 of those 50 minute time periods because there isn't a need to plus I'm sure you would wear out if you did. If you haven't tried this you might want to give it a try setting just two 50 minute time periods for a couple days and fiercely keeping them without interruptions to see what I mean. I'd love to hear about your experience and any other kind of quirky things that work.
Re: Social Bookmarking Site List Re: Social Bookmarking Site List - Good List - over time these resources will be weeded out though . . . look for the tools that are more used to organize, well, tools. Addthis has done a great job of that - its like everyone inventing the wheel at once sometimes however.
Working with Suppliers Working with Suppliers - Hi Mary, You're facing a very common issue for entrepreneurs. 2 suggestions I have for you: 1) Develop a personal relationship. Get to know your potential suppliers and meet with them face to face. If it's a meeting you set up or you find them at a tradeshow, etc get to know the people and they're much more likely to cut you a break. People want to work with people they know and like. 2) Have you considered smaller, local suppliers who see your business as more important?
