Are You A Smart Cookie When It Comes to Overwhelm?

Are you one of the millions of women who feel like you can never get on top of things? Overwhelm seems to be a daily part of our lives in this day and age. We are constantly bombarded in what I call "The Age of Instant"; a virtual sensory assault 24/7 (since many of us are also sleep deprived!).

Many of the women I coach are overloaded with commitments and activities, as well as demands on their time and energy. It seems that there is always too much to do and never enough time to get it all done...and have time to take care of YOU!

Whenever your stress levels are high it doesn't take much to tip you over the edge into the dreaded "Overwhelm".

So what exactly is "overwhelm"? Overwhelm is what we feel when there is too much on our plate, we have no idea what or where to start on first, and we fear that we will never, ever be able to get it all done...it's overload on steroids!

Overwhelm comes from scattered thoughts, mental clutter and not having clarity about what you are doing.

Many times women are reluctant to acknowledge to ourselves or admit to others that we are feeling overwhelmed because we have been taught that overwhelm is a sign of weakness or not being able to ‘hold it together'.

There are many strategies that work with getting your overwhelm under control. Here are 4 effective tips for when you feel overwhelm setting in.

1. Language is a key factor. Instead of saying "I am overwhelmed", change your language to "I feel overwhelmed". It's important to remember that overwhelm is a feeling, not a state of being.

2. Learn what triggers overwhelm for you. Everyone has different symptoms of overwhelm. Self awareness is crucial. Too little sleep, physical health, over committing, trying to please everyone, and perfectionism are all common factors in overwhelm.

3. Give yourself a cushion. If possible, give yourself 24 hours before taking you say yes to yet another obligation or request.

4. Admit that you are feeling overwhelmed. Honesty with yourself is the first step in being proactive. Remember that's it about living from the inside out; being proactive and not reactive.

For many women, it's about figuring out what you need to say "no" to in order to say "yes" to the things that you want in life.

The 11-7-06 NEFA Meeting went very well! The 11-7-06 NEFA Meeting went very well! - The NEFA meeting held Tuesday November 7th went very well. Mary also distributed a copy of her book, "Tips & Traps of buying a franchise". The next NEFA meeting is January 23rd, when the IFA Chairman "Doc" Cohen, an American Cookie Company multi unit franchisee with make a presentation. Business Parnaphelia "can" be useless... Business Parnaphelia "can" be useless... - Personally I find it difficult to justify an investment in such products to give away without being able to measure results that investments is making for you - especially if your Small Business/an Entrepreneur. I do agree that you should take care of your current clients by sending them something memorable during the year but not during any of the holidays as they are already getting inundated with gifts. By sending it at a random date (like the date of their first purchase from you) you still make it special and unexpected - also you get an opportunity to ask for another sale with a special offer ;O) But when I say memorable - it should be memorable not a mug. Say you knew your client has a dog - send them a Doggie Cookie Kit - they'll Love you for it and rave about you to their friends. There you just created word of mouth advertising. I hope I *kinda* helped... I have a habit of careering off topic.

For myself, I don't really care for their acronym... MAGIC. Gives people the subtle impression that good things happen at the snap of a finger instead of lots of hard work!
Are You a Businessgirl or a Businesswoman? Are You a Businessgirl or a Businesswoman? - One thing that has irked me off and on for 30 years is the tendency of people - both men [i:2wryyhvf]and [/i:2wryyhvf]women, to refer to women, whatever their age, as 'girls' rather than women. College basketball announcers, coachers and players do it, as do the fans. These are 'girls' who are between the ages of 18 - 21, that's women in my book. Tennis players and announcers do it. John McEnroe called 'em girls and just when I was getting annoyed at him for being a bit of a male chauvanist, they interviewed player Lindsay Davenport - 30 years old, and she referred to 'em as girls as well. The Bond "girls" were girls up until the 90s, I admit, doing nothing more than providing someone for Bond to bed and rescue, but in the last few installments the "girl" has been more of a power player...nevertheless she's still a 'girl'. And of course there was the TV series The Golden Girls - which I liked by the way, but which featured mature women calling themselves girls And now here it is in the 2000s, and we get this: The Girl's Guide To Starting Your Own Business, by Caitlin Friedman and Kimberly Yorio. Their photos are on the cover - presumably the photo is of them and not models - and they are definitely women, not girls. And what "girly" chapter titles do they give us? "The Scary Stuff" (financial matters) and a chapter on ACTING Like an Adult. (Caps mine). So popular was this book, apparently, that they've now come out with a sequel: The Girl's Guide to Being a Boss (Without Being A Bitch): Valuable Lessons, Smart Suggestions, and true stories for succeeding as the CHICK-IN-CHARGE. (My caps) and once again I was tempted to take the book and throw it across the room. Let's indulge in [i:2wryyhvf]all [/i:2wryyhvf]the cliches, shall we? So I'd like to hear from other businesswomen out there. Do you find yourself referred to as a girl? Do you mind it? Do you like the culture that still propagates that mindset?
