The Global Economy Recovery Will Be Driven By Women: Part 2

Countries Winning with Women
Katty Kay and Claire Shipman argued in their bookWomenonomicsthat “There's a sound business reason why Norway now mandates that corporate boards be 40 percent female. And why Hermes, the only French company to outperform expectations during the recession, also has, you guessed it, a management structure dominated by women.”

“Iceland's spectacular meltdown was caused by a banking and business culture that was reckless and overwhelmingly male,” explained Ruth Sunderland, business editor of The Observer. She wrote about the forty-something generation of women now running the country. “They are committed to reinvent business and society by injecting values of openness, fairness and social responsibility.” A lesson many U. S. companies could learn from.

According to Kay and Shipman, “New research says a healthy dose of estrogen may be the key not only to our fiscal recovery, but also to economic strength worldwide.”

“Women-owned businesses are a driving force in the national economy, generating $2 trillion in sales and employing 13 million people,” said Linda Denny, WBENC (Women Business Enterprise National Council) President and CEO. “10.1 million companies in the U.S. are women-owned firms.”

“Nevertheless, we believe that as this recession abates, women not only will represent one of the largest market opportunities in our lifetimes, but also will be an important force in spurring a recovery and generating new prosperity,” said Michael Silverstein and Kate Sayre.²

Re: Businesswomen in the news Re: Businesswomen in the news - Hey hey hey....Calm down. What you are forgetting and the press isnt taking into consideration the rise of entrepreneurship. Women arent leaving the workforce, they are starting their own workforces... A few years ago I was president of the Canadian Association of Women Executives. I got a call from Global National who wanted a comment on the fact that women were leaving corporate Canada in droves....and what did I think about it......was it the glass ceiling etc.. Well, its because women are flocking to entrepreneurship but ladies, that doesnt make the news. the media is looking for information that will prove their 'the economy is in a slump'.... It simply isnt true. There are more women starting and running their own businesses than we've ever seen. Dont forget that the media is out for the media and scare tactics and bad news gets the coverage.... J

While most of the media attention was naturally devoted to...., the very existence of thousands of small businesses was determined by whether or not they had adequate insurance, sufficient technological support, and viable disaster contingency plans." Men and Women, or Republican vs Democrat? Men and Women, or Republican vs Democrat? - >>I don't know many men who talk about the environment so I think you're right that it probably wouldn't be in their top ten It all depends on what you mean by the environment. Global warming? Yes...men such as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannitty and Neal Boortz say it's not happening and that it's just an anti-capitalist plot. And I think the Republicans prefer to believe that while Democrats - male, ie Al Gore - are pushing it for all its worth. Meanwhile female Sheryl Crowe is telling us to use one square of bathroom tissue a piece... that's just plain silly! If American Women were that concerned about the environment they'd all be riding their bikes to work instead of driving those big old SUVs...
Re: History of Women in Business in the United States Re: History of Women in Business in the United States - Yes. Women have increasingly made positive economic contributions to society and their position is being recognized more and more as seen on the Forbes List of Executive Women. In general, women can be a bit more practical in their approach as entrepreneurs too.
