Can the disabled own their own company?
Can those with a disability be successful in business? Sure they can. The secret is to find something you love to do, something that you can do for free. Start off by volunteering. There's a such thing as positive stress and negative stress. Negative stress is what happens when you work a stressful 9 to 5 job. You really don't want to be at work. The customers get irate and there's little you can do about this. Challenges occur that you don't know how to overcome. Supervisors put more work on you than you can handle. All of this adds to your stress. All of this is negative stress. But when you're doing a job that is fun you're a natural at it. You quickly attack problems. You rarely get an unsatisfied customer because you're working from your heart, and you get a load of work that you can actually handle. This is positive stress and I believe those with a disability can easily handle this type of job. I was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and I can not work a daily 9 to 5 but I blog and I find it easy. I write and I find it easy. I'm a TV producer and I find it easy. And I'm an actress and I find it easy. Start developing a list of different talents that you can do for free. The money will come eventually because you're doing it from your heart. Before we're born we choose the life that we want to live. We choose physical and mental disabilities to overcome in order to strengthen our mind and soul. When you pass one day and you're standing in front of that scanning machine looking at your past life, will you be proud or will you realize you've wasted your life? I'm here to tell you that I am going to be proud and you should too. Do everything in your power to make a difference. No way do I want to waste my life. Your life is serious. You want to live this life not just survive it. Don't allow your disability to interfere with your progress.

Finance and the Disabiled Entrepreneurs Advice Needed
- Need advice from someone who has been in my situation before.
One thing is, we have been financing my adventure. It is not cheep and in this group you all understand this!!
Not only did I start up my business of photography, but got into land as well. I got into land for the opportunity was there and I took it! Now just yesterday I was asked if I wanted another 40 acres on top of the 20 acres.... this I feel can wait?
My thought pattern has been and still is to prove to the finance establishments that I produce what people want. I make it myself, that is my photography.
I also want to prove to these establishments that I am worth investing in.
Now comes the part that I am just not sure of and need advice on. I called the government and had a very lengthy conversation about the disability program I am on. What can or cant I do on the program, if it is a program that I can get kicked off of etc.. My goal is to make, in profits over what I get in disability. I am working very hard at this. This goal of mine is to prove to myself that I can do it no matter what program I am on.
The government claims I can make whatever I can. I can own whatever. I am disabled, will always be disabled and the federal disability judge has determined this. BUT the state has already slapped my hands for trying and I do not get their help. I do not understand the states stance on this. To be totally self sufficient I need help. I try very hard to overcome my health problems, but health is health.
Now will the financial establishments see me being disabled a bad thing? I have never been into grants, but maybe that is a route to go? What do you think?
Established micro business with bad credit but great b-plan
- I am a true entrepreneuer. Meaning I have created a business by simply having a great idea and run with it. I have also failed, lost time and money and decided to try it all over again when I had another bright idea.
Recently I had to seperate myself from a business partnership and create another company. My new business is 12 months old and going strong. We provide sales & marketing assistance to entrepreneurs and small business owners. The company has three seperate revenue streams.
1) We provide direct outside sales representation to small business owners. Essentially, we function as manufacturing reps but for local small businesses.
2) We do business and marketing plans for start-up and companies seeking to grow.
3) We are a disabled veterans business enterprise. Located in California, this provides us with unlimited opportunities for contracting with city, county and state government.
My problem is that I cannot secure funding to support basic operating expenses for the next 12 months. Banks that claim to have special programs for disabled veteran business owners turn me down because of my credit score. Angel investors turn me down because my business plan does not show explosive growth. Prosper.com, circlelending.com and all of the internet based unsecured lending companies have turned me down because of my credit score.
I have spoken with lending professionals with various levels of experience and I keep hearing the same advise; "own property and use the equity, get a partner with assets, borrow from family." None of those work for me at this time.
Now I realize I damaged my credit by taking far too many risks in the past and raising my score will take time. At the same time, I have 6 clients that are simply waiting for sales representation and I don't have the funds to recruit and hire salespeople. Worst of all, I have to pass on certain contracting opportunities because I cannot accept a job where payment takes 45 to 60 days because I have to pay people every two weeks. I currently have myself, two part-time sales reps and 4 loyal clients that together provides my company with average sales of $5,000 monthly. So I am still extremely small, but I have a solid plan and marketing strategy.
I have run out of good ideas.
Re: How to Manage Your Emails
- I used to have a program, like sticky notes, to remind me of things I need to do and read later. it worked for one or two days, then each time a note popped up i closed it, then I disabled the notification, and then I uninstalled it.
Very handy.
Licensing and Exclusivity
- Is it better to receive a license from a company to provide a product to a certain region before of after your company is established?
Ex. XYZ is a small company that manufactures cars and sells them in Europe and I want to get their cars licensed from them and be the sole provider of their flying cars in Asia. So would it be better for me to establish a company first or first get the licensing then build the company after?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Young electrical engineer
- I'm 15. I am a Director of B&S Associates, and I also have a 50% stake in the company. It is a Ltd company incorporated in the UK. Underneath the company there are currently a few other businesses. Most are internet-based.
I've owned over 10 different businesses so far, but this is my first 'real' company (as in registered and incorporated).
Right now doing my exams here in the UK - my last year in compulsory education. I will probably stay on at college and hope to go to university. But I'm a little torn as I want to be able to put all my time in the company - if I do go to uni I am going to have to wait at least 5 more years before I can do that
