E-Prescribing For Controlled Substances Is Finally Here

The final e-prescribing barrier has been eliminated thanks to the release of EPCS Gold. This fully certified e-prescribing software meets the prescription processing requirements for controlled substances set by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the identity proofing requirements of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Best of all, it\'s available right now to all eligible providers nationwide.

Why is this so monumentally important (aside from being the one and only software of its kind on the market right now)? Let's examine four reasons...

E-prescribing Benefits for All

According to DEA estimates, controlled substances account for 11% of all prescriptions. That means 11% of all prescriptions written previously could not be written electronically. EPCS opens the door for doctors who\'s prescriptions mostly consist of controlled substances to the convenience and benefits of e-prescribing.

Improved Patient Safety

When a provider writes a prescription for a controlled substance electronically, the prescription will now be included in all drug/drug and drug/allergy interaction checking and the provider will be alerted to any adverse drug interactions at the point of care. This helps avoid any potentially dangerous complications that were much more difficult to catch with paper prescriptions.

Streamlined Workflow

Prior to controlled substance e-prescribing, many physicians had to maintain two prescribing systems - a paper-based system for controlled substances and an electronic system for everything else. Those days are now gone. Doctors can have a single workflow / system for e-prescribing.

Eliminate Doctor Shopping

Certain EPCS systems have a flagging system that alerts of multiple prescriptions for controlled substances. This helps caregivers track if someone is misusing controlled substances.

With what was regarded as the final barrier to wide-spread e-prescribing adoption eliminated, doctors can now experience e-prescribing as it\'s always been envisioned - a complete solution to ALL their prescribing needs.
