Modular EHR’s: Small Investment; Big Gains

Full-featured electronic health records are an intelligent choice for active physician offices with overwhelming amounts of data. In contrast, some practices in low population areas had no intention of going ‘electronic' until the arrival of Meaningful Use. The majority of practices though tend to fall between the two extremes, and that's where modular EHR's are a perfect fit. Modular EHR's provide a ‘stepping stone' into the world of paperless EHR's. Small to mid-size practices find several benefits to this approach. One advantage is financial. A modular EHR is quite affordable, particularly to small practices just starting out or doctors in low populated areas. It saves money if a physician purchases only the components the office needs most, like e-prescribing.

Think of a doctor in a rural area. He wants to adhere to Meaningful Use regulations, but he doesn't need a full-featured system unless there's a large population explosion. A modular EHR that meets Meaningful Use requirements would suit his practice's needs much better.

Another benefit of a modular EHR is ease-of-use. For offices first getting into electronic health records, they may lack the computer skills to operate a larger system. Again, with modular EHR's, the most ‘in demand' features can be added first and then expanded upon as the staff adapts to the system.

By the same token, a modular EHR can grow with a practice. As the need for a more robust system increases, each ‘new step' becomes an excellent ‘primer' for a full-featured EHR. Using our doctor above as an example again, let's say a new manufacturer creates a population boom. Since his staff is already familiar with the modular EHR, making the leap to a full-featured electronic health records system won't seem as big or intimidating.

So again, full-featured EHR's have a useful purpose. Nevertheless, the small investment and big gains associated with a modular EHR are worth exploring for many small to mid-size practices today.
