Office Managers Guide To Preventing E-Prescribing Penalties for Your Practice
Providers that still aren't e-prescribing by June 30, 2011 are facing Medicare payment reductions in 2012. That's less than three months to buy, learn, and become an expert at e-prescribing! With that in mind, choosing the right electronic prescribing solution is essential to avoid these upcoming MIPPA penalties.
We have worked with thousands of practices and there are 3 simple tips to ensure you make the best decisions for you office!
MIPPA E-Prescribing Tip #1:
Look for a solution that won't break the bank, and most important, will cost far less than electronic prescribing penalties and incentives. Don't forget, MIPPA e-prescribing penalties will increase each year...that can add up to thousands of dollars in Medicare payment reductions! So look for a solution that will cost only a small amount in comparison. Also, be sure to verify that there are no extra fees, no extra hardware, no new IT hires required. Budget constraints should be the first factors to consider when deciding how to best avoid MIPPA e-prescribing penalties.
MIPPA E-Prescribing Tip #2:
Find an electronic prescribing solution that's fast to learn. With just three months and counting to MIPPA e-prescribing penalties, the last thing doctors need is a solution that takes months to learn and a team of trainers descending on their offices. Ask your vendor how long training sessions are, they should be no more than 3 hours per doctor. Also, ensure that there are no charges for the training session, either, or for follow up customer support questions and calls.
MIPPA E-Prescribing Tip #3:
Seek a solution that delivers quick expertise. The last thing doctors need is several months of interrupted workflow while everyone tries to figure out how to use the new electronic prescribing solution (a prescription for getting hit with those MIPPA e-prescribing penalties after all). Choose a system that is specifically designed by doctors for doctors to ensure that its intuitive. A good system takes less than a week of regular use of and users are flying through the system like they've always used e-prescribing.
More MIPPA E-Prescribing Tips
Although time is of the essence to avoid MIPPA e-prescribing penalties, providers should be careful to consider a few additional factors before selecting an e-prescribing solution.
For example, doctors can also earn MIPPA e-prescribing incentives if they submit ten electronic prescriptions by June 30,2011. Additionally, they can participate in the PQRS incentives program - provided they use a qualified solution. And practices should also keep their eye on Electronic Medical Records Stimulus opportunities such as Meaningful Use of EHR; specifically, will their chosen e-prescribing solution provide a path to this major government health care IT initiative? The right system will allow doctors to avoid MIPPA e-prescribing , gain PQRS incentives, and up to $63K in Medicaid Meaningful Use of EHR incentives! If providers see both Medicaid and Medicare patients, they may very well be eligible to participate in all three of these programs, not just MIPPA e-prescribing incentives.
