Question of the Day: What will you do with your failure?
"Success is not final. Failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts." - Winston Churchill
I love this quote because it reminds me to never rest on my laurels...in the business world it's all about "what have you done for me lately". Sure I knocked a project or a goal out of the park, but if today I messed up big time, no one cares that I was awesome last week.
Everyone fails. Who cares. You can become paralyzed with fear or you can have the courage to keep on pushing towards the goal. The question is- what will you do with your failure? Will you learn from it and avoid future pitfalls? Or will you let it tie your hands and immobilize you?
The best way to succeed is to learn from your failure. No one ever gets it 100% right the very first time anyway. (Unless your name is Steve Jobs is the CEO of Apple or perhaps Eric Schmidt the CEO of Google)
Part of my 5 ground rules for mentoring my staff is to focus on making whatever it is you are trying to achieve better today than yesterday (Read more about this in the book "Good to Great").
That's it. It's do-able-it's reasonable-AND it's possible to be enthusiastic about your daily success because you are taking real, measurable steps toward a bigger goal.
I've recently came to grips with being happy with small amounts of "better" - and not trying to have success be a landslide win. I focus on staying the course, small wins, being satisfied with incremental improvements and avoiding big failures. PLUS you only need a little bit of courage to get going!! Fear of failure is crippling- so hit smaller milestones along the way and eventually you'll get there!
