I recently had an e-mail from a client telling me how happy she was with her new photography course, and how delighted she was to get an interview for a course she really wanted to do. It was a far cry from the unhappy, underachieving young woman I had met over the phone over four months previously. She had been referred to me by another client as she was deeply unhappy in her current position as a waitress. She felt she could do so much more, but she was an illegal immigrant which meant that many of her options were limited. I still felt that she had many unexplored avenues for other work choices. She was open and willing to try anything, as pain was really biting her at this stage!
The immediate issue that we looked at was how she felt she was treated at work. She felt she was not treated with respect and that certain individuals tended to pick on her. I asked her was to watch how this person treated others, and she then noticed that there were certain people that he did not insult or tease. She began noticing how these people acted and how their behavior differed from hers. We explored this for a while, and we co-developed strategies for handling these situations. These included speaking to the person afterwards and clearly expressing what feelings arose when particular things were said. One of the surprising things she found out was that one individual was deeply apologetic when he found out he had hurt her.
We worked on developing stronger boundaries, and as she did, she found that she was actually picked on less and less.
One of the things that kept coming up strongly in our conversations was the theme of beauty. She had decorated her own home, and found that many people complimented her on it, to the extent that a friend had asked her to help decorate his pub. This particular talent was something she utterly took for granted! I pointed this talent out to her on several occasions. We looked at ways of incorporating more beauty into her life. I also did a (DISC) assessment with her, and one of the strongest traits that emerged was that of aestheticism. It was exceptionally pronounced, and this finally convinced her that she really did have a gift for beauty. We looked at a number of options for really beginning to look at how she could bring this more into her life with a view to moving her work life in that way, and the course she has decided on is to embark on a photography course, which she is absolutely delighted with.
