Does it Pass the Katie Couric Test

There is no one who doesn’t have a past; everyone has done things in their past that could be seen in a negative light. No life history looks perfect under close scrutiny. There are always actions that, when put under a microscope, could put a blemish on someone’s life. No one is perfect, and when a life is examined closely that becomes painfully clear.

Unfortunately, understanding how the past creates one’s future isn’t always clear until it is too late. The best thing to do when the past comes back is to admit it. Don’t try to justify your actions, and above all don’t lie about it. The best example I have ever seen about handling one’s past came from the singer/actress Madonna. A news reporter asked her something about her past that wasn’t exactly complimentary. She replied that yes, she had done that and moved on. She didn’t try to explain it, make excuses for it or even lie about it. I thought it was the most honest way to handle a sticky situation without making it worse.

With this knowledge of how the past creates my future, when I’m considering whether I should take a certain action or not, I use what I call the Katie Couric test. Before performing a questionable action, I ask myself whether I would want to be on national television being interviewed by Katie Couric and have her ask me a question about what I am thinking of doing. The answer tells me whether I want to follow through or not. This is also referred to as the “Mom” test. The question to ask here is would you want your mother to read about your actions on the front of the daily newspaper. Asking yourself questions on how you would view, or how others would view your actions, will help you decide whether to proceed or not. The whole idea is not to make decisions or take action in a void. Think through what you are doing and be very honest with yourself about whether you can live with your action or not. This really is the true test: can you live with your actions without regret?

The past never really goes away. Although it is a place we don’t want to live, there are times when it will come back to visit. The best way to deal with the past is to live each day to the fullest and to participate only in actions that you can live with. No one is perfect, life isn’t perfect and we all make mistakes. But if, at the end of the day, you are at peace with the actions you have taken, then the past may come back to visit, but it won’t haunt you.

test, test, test test, test, test - Hi Sandy, The great thing about online marketing is that everything can be tested and you can quickly gauge if something is working or not. Run two tests, see if people respond better to the one option or the multiple options. Your customers will tell you which method they prefer and will vote with their wallets. Test your headlines, test your messaging, test your pricing, test your # of options - test everything! Good luck!
Forum access problems Forum access problems - Hi GT and moderators, I haven't posted here for a couple of days because I thought the site was down. It turns out that I am unable to access the site on my Firefox browser, although it works as normal for everything else... I only discovered the site was up when I checked it from a computer elsewhere today using Internet Explorer. When I try to access the site from my Firefox I get an "Apache HTTP Server Test Page for evancarmichael.com and an HTTP 403 - Forbidden Access page for evancarmichael.com/Forums/... However, I can access the forum perfectly well on the same computer from my Safari browser. Question: Is anybody else having a problem accessing evancarmichael.com with Firefox? Thanks, DH
Re: How do you stay motivated as a startup? Re: How do you stay motivated as a startup? - [quote="BuzzAroundBooks":oaw6ne0y]Hi Everyone, I was wondering if some of you could share a few tips on how you stay motivated as a new entrepreneur. For instance, what do you do when: • You lose an opportunity, sale or client • You see a competitor doing something very well • An expense costs more than you bargained for • Your hard work and efforts haven't yielded any significant results yet Thanks![/quote:oaw6ne0y] Lose an opportunity - i try to remember that there are millions of fish in the sea... i lose one.. there's still plenty of opportunity to go after more. And depending on who it is.. i feel honored to have even had the opportunity to go for it. Seeing a competitor do something well is actually a good motivator for me. It will push me to finish or upgrade one of my services or marketing campaigns. All of business is about trial and error... so if my hard work isn't seeing results, than i tweak my practices a bit until they do. Test and retest. Talk to others...see what it is that i'm doing differently.
Referral strategy Referral strategy - Hi Andy - here are some of my thoughts: 1) It could work depending on the demographic. Sometimes incentives work very well to generate referrals and other times they don't. I remember when Intuit announced a cash referral program for their customers. The reaction was not positive. Customers said they are happy to refer their friends on because they loved the product and did not want to feel like they are "selling" their friends. Others, however, love being affiliates and base their entire business on this type of model. Test it and see the reaction. It may work out and it may not. It will probably be a nice add-on but I wouldn't rely on it as my main marketing strategy. 2) Why limit it to 2? Like any other community you're going to have people who really take to your idea and others who won't. You want to create champions of the customers who refer so why limit it to 2? Providing an ongoing revenue stream to your referral partners is a great way to bring in new business. 3) I agree about them paying up front first. By "credit" do you mean he'll be paying them $300 cash or does it go towards other products / services he is offering?
Five Biggest Mistakes Women Make in Business Five Biggest Mistakes Women Make in Business - Looking for some information I found an interesting article which mentions about “Five Biggest Mistakes Women Make in Business.” 1. Flighty Networking—Some women have the mistaken notion that networking means attending as many events as possible and pitching their business. This concept has two fallacies: First, it’s crazy to spend all your time flitting between functions unless you feel confident that your target audience will be there. Rather than attending lots of events, analyze who will be at each one and then determine if it is smart for you to invest your time and money to be there. Second, when you do identify an individual as a potential prospect, describe yourself and your business in a short, interesting way. Then focus on asking questions and really listening to what they say. Remember the old adage: Be Interested rather than Interesting. 2. Being too busy to volunteer—Always be ready to volunteer. Whether it is for CED or another organization to which you belong, always be ready to offer service. I have found that every hour I invest in an organization such as CED comes back to me tenfold. 3. Inflexibility—Today’s world is one of constant change and requires creative, out-of-the-norm approaches to business problems and opportunities. You can’t run a 2007 business playing with a 1999 handbook. It just won’t work. Always be open to listening, observing and trying new things. Always be thinking, “What will my customers want five years from now?” And be sure your business is heading in that direction. 4. Showing your strength by bullying others—I know so many women who have had to be “tough” in order to survive in a male-dominated industry. But the really smart ones have taken a different approach. They have developed a cooperative, consensus-building approach in dealing with others, and this wins out every time. 5. Working from a position of scarcity—Too many businesspeople have a “scarcity mentality.” They believe there is not enough time, not enough money, not enough customers, not enough qualified employees and on and on. Of course there is enough of everything in the world; you just have to look at situations from a slightly different perspective to be able to see it all. It is up to you to share and keep the cycle of success alive, not only for your own organization, but for every business within CED. Pass on what you’ve learned through trial and error, and share your time, energy, and encouragement with others. This is the mark of a truly successful entrepreneur!
