Find the right coach
Most coaches have qualifications and/or experience which you can check. They are usually pleasant people with a genuine interest in personal development. I coach mostly by telephone so my clients can keep in touch even when busy or away from home, others coaches have offices where you meet and some meet you at your home or work. Coaching is often arranged as hourly appointments once a week/fortnight/month, others offer shorter sessions when necessary or even coaching marathons if that suits their client best.
Many coaches ask you to set your own agenda, offering support whilst challenging you to be both ambitious and realistic when improving your life-work balance, or making small but significant changes for your business or planning ahead for a satisfying retirement. Others take a more directive mentoring role, using their personal experience to advise and guide you whilst others take a role closer to that of a therapist to help you explore the reasons why you feel you’re stuck in a rut.
Which style is right for you on this occasion? Do you want to set your own agenda with support from your coach who will use their skills to motivate, challenge and support you? Would you prefer to be advised or directed by a coach/mentor or to talk about the feelings which you think hold you back with a coach/therapist? Would the convenience and lower cost of confidential telephone coaching be best or do you have the time to visit your coach or have them visit you at home or at work? If you use these suggestions to refine your ideas about what sort of coach would suit you best for your current purposes, you’ll be well placed to review websites, read promotional materials and evaluate presentations more efficiently. As all good coaches should offer a demonstration or complimentary coaching session before you make a final decision, book at least one no-strings appointment and allow your personal experience to guide you to the right coach.
