How To Master Stress and Anxiety Part 2
How To Master Stress and Anxiety Part 2
If you could possess these attributes, wouldn't you be in the best possible condition to face any challenge... no matter what the future holds?
But what does the future hold?
The future holds more change, more challenge... more of virtually everything that underlies all your stress... in every area of your life. How can we know this?
All you have to do is track how stress is increasing, and you'll get a pretty good idea of how change is similarly increasing, because stress is our adaptation to change. In other words, increasing change equals increasing stress.
To gauge how stress is increasing a survey was performed. You can see the shocking details of this survey by reading my "Stressed To Excess" article.
To summarize briefly, this 1987 study revealed that we have over a thousand times more individual stressors each day than our ancestors had in the early 1900s.
The survey also confirmed what I said earlier, that your body processes over 90% of these new stressors unconsciously.
And this was twenty yeas ago!
Do you think times have become more stressful than the mid 1980s?
What would happen to you if change and the resultant stress were to get even worse than it is today?
Do you want to know how to increase your stress-handling capacity?
It is undeniable that stress levels are increasing at a phenomenal rate. The important point is this: As the frequency of change increases, so does the potential for unhealthy stress.
Are you going to do something about it now or wait like many others until that avalanche comes crashing down?
Maybe you have tried. All of us reach a point where we need help, and it can feel lonely and overwhelming to navigate these challenges on your own. Maybe you purchased a book or CD, took a night class, or searched the web for the latest gadget or technique to help relieve your stress.
Did they work?
You are still reading because those other programs didn't work. And I know why.
Remember those pesky misperceptions I mentioned earlier, those "buts" and "if onlys"?
Let me reveal the secret why other methods may not have worked for you.
It has to do with yet another effect of your automatic response to stress. This is called the fight or flight response.
When you encounter situations or people that threaten or challenge you, a change occurs in your brain chemistry that favors quick thinking over rationality. This same response dampens your body-sense. These are both remnants of an adaptive mechanism that served our ancestors well, but today they can cause serious health disorders and disease.
Without even knowing it, you have moved unconsciously and continuously into a state of readiness (for an "attack" that never happens) that prevents you from noticing the stress and strain you are under.
Your conscious mind denies the effects of stress and relies on the powerful subconscious mind to defend itself against the onslaught of imagined physical harm. It therefore sabotages any real progress toward deep and skillful relaxation, as this seems dangerous to a mind that is under an alleged threat.
Ironically, you find yourself fighting against your own self-defense mechanism. And there's no way to win the battle until you retrain yourself to respond differently to those things that challenge or threaten you.
And this does not necessarily mean that a change must be made in your outer world. It just means that you must alter how the external situation affects your inner world of thoughts and feelings, for these directly affect your physical body and health.
Do you want to avoid losing your vitality and health to this destructive cycle of stress?
Will you choose to break this cycle before the MindBody breaks down?
I hope I've sounded the alarm loud enough by now to inspire you to action.
Have I?
Good. Are you are ready for the solution?
