A FIT AND FLEXIBLE BODY

If you have read my previous articles, you are probably keen on fitness and reshaping your body. We all want to look and feel our best inside and outside, and that means good health and increased levels of vitality.
What is fitness? By fitness we mean the overall physical condition of the individual. This can range from the peak of human performance to extreme illness. The position fluctuates depending on the training we do and the state of our health.
To be really fit, you need to have Endurance, Strength, and Flexibility. Each of these components makes a specific contribution to the whole. They are interdependent up to a certain extent, but even some sportswomen and sportsmen have a great deal of one and very little of the other. Let us examine the importance of flexibility first.
Flexibility is often the most neglected component of exercise. Flexibility training can help realign skeletal structure that has adapted to habits of incorrect posture. Lack of flexibility is one of the most frequent causes of inefficient techniques in sports. It is also a big reason for strain and tear injuries in sport and our every day lives. The best way of preventing injury is to develop flexibility. By increasing the possible range of movement in the shoulders, hips, trunk and ankles, it is possible to improve, both speed and agility as well as save energy. With the rise in popularity of yoga and Pilates which incorporate a lot of stretching, people are seeing the real benefits of being more flexible. An exercise programme should devote about 10 minutes to flexibility development.
Once again, I am refraining from writing down any exercises, but instead suggest that you get books, Cd's or videos on yoga or Pilates to improve your flexibility. Knowledge can improve your motivation too.
When doing stretching exercises, you should hold each end or final position for about 15 seconds. Take time to enjoy the exercises rather than rushing in an effort to get them over and done with. Following are some of the Guidelines advocated by National Coaching Foundation (UK) for stretching:

• Ease into the stretch to the point where it is comfortable. Never strain, because this may damage the muscles.
• Stretch so that the pull is felt in the bulky central portion of the muscle.
• As the feeling of stretching decreases, you should stretch a little further, making sure it still feels comfortable.
• Do not bounce in the end position, because of the strain on the muscles being stretched.

Please remember once again that to be fit, you need to have strength, endurance and flexibility. When you exercise to develop flexibility, do not ignore strength building exercises and cardio training for endurance. Train regularly and you will have changes in the body which include improved circulation, respiration and heart function, improvements in strength, tougher bones, tendons, ligaments and connective tissue.
You do not have to experience pain to make fitness gains. But you can’t be laid back also. You must be willing to push yourself a little. Challenge yourself.
