BE YOUR OWN STRESSOMETER
Technology has made great advances in making available new methods for investigating the interplay between mental and physical processes. But we can act as our own stress metres by using feelings and perceptions as instruments which can help to identify the factors in the environment that tell hard over our body and mind. Learn to recognise your own tell tale signs, physical symptoms are easily recognised i.e. a racing pulse, muscle tension, increased sweating, but people also experience emotional problems mentioned above such as anxiety and a sense of hopelessness. You may find it difficult to concentrate or make decisions. Behavioural changes include aggressiveness, or a reliance on cigarettes, drugs (both prescribed and illicit) and alcohol. I have been told by quite a few colleagues that they cannot give up smoking while holding their current positions.
Environmental factors which raise our stress levels may be physical or chemical, such as noise or smell. Think how pent up you become when a noisy neighbour plays loud music or is engaged in some DIY work on the adjoining wall. The environmental factors could also be monotonous work or inter personal conflict. We look at the watch when engaged in tedious work and time flies when the task is interesting.
