Before you set Goals Before you set your goal, get as much information as possible about your goal. For example keeping to the aim of getting fitter, the following questions may help you with acquiring relevant knowledge:
• How did you decide on your goal?
• How do the experts calculate what is the right weight for someone of your height and gender?
• What is my preferred strategy? (Walking, jogging, yoga, weight training etc.)
The knowledge you acquire will give you the confidence to pursue the goal, and probably make you an expert on the subject. You will not be pushed off course by others with different theories or ideas.
Support Structure: It is not always easy to achieve goals on your own. Don’t be a loner. The attainment of your goals will require space and people, so plan for this as you set your goals. If your goal is to be lighter, find people who are have similar aims and link up with them. If you want to start jogging, get some friends to join you in the park at a set time. The shared experience, mutual support, commiserations and the social element, would maintain and strengthen your commitment.
Devising the Plan: An ancient Taoist philosopher is credited with the saying that: “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” Your first step could be to devise an Action Plan or Personal Learning Plan. A breakdown of an Action Plan with the steps that will get to your goal is a must. You may wish to use the following headings for your Action Plan : Name; Date; Development Goal(s); How will I achieve the Goal(Plan a strategy);Starting date; Review dates; Support system.; Signed; Date.
