BEING TRUE TO OUR VALUES
People who do not know their values, what is precious to them, be it family- happiness, freedom, caring, health, helpfulness, honesty, involvement, integrity, wisdom, tenderness, sincerity, self-respect, spirituality, religion etc. live in a state of denial. They pretend to be what they are not, and lose contact with themselves. They stop feeling completely or acknowledging their sensations, and justify behaviour that is counter to their values. Some people get depressed, and others turn to painkillers of one sort or another. Others find solace in excessive drinking or illicit drugs.
It is fine to be materialistic, but then you need to examine your motives also. Instead of having one aim only in life, it is advisable to reflect on a vision in a holistic way. It is much more wholesome to address as many aspects of your life as possible, rather than one or two only. It is better to have a balanced life rather than wait for a heart attack, or family conflict to wake you up to your relationships, spiritual life, community responsibility and physical health.
Your philosophy determines your values. If you have clear understanding of your destination, the end in mind, what really matters most to you, you can make certain that what ever you do on any particular day does not violate the criteria you have defined as supremely important to you. If you know where you are now, then it will be easier to have a vision of where you are going and – where you want to be. The steps you take will always be in the right direction. The more your goal fits into the structure of your core beliefs and values, the more likely it is going to be achieved.
The goals will then be in harmony with correct principles, with natural laws, which give you greater power to achieve them. They are not some one else’s goals that you have adopted. They are your goals, based on your deepest values. They reflect your chosen mission in life, your role in this wide world.
Sometimes there will be a conflict between two important values, such as family life and work. In terms of making changes, understanding beliefs and values offers huge leverage. When you value something, or believe in it enough, you will concentrate on what is really important to you. You will be doing what you really want to be doing, and become closer to what you want to be. When we work with our hearts and minds (values and beliefs) we acquire better balance in our lives.

The book is about being a well
rounded-person, about being fulfilled in
the realization of goals. Most of us
concentrate on acquiring material
possessions or climbing the corporate

Sooner or later, we feel unhappy because
of dissatisfaction with the way we are
