CHALLENGE YOUR BRAIN

A study in 2006 showed that elderly people are learning new languages. Some people may have reservations, or why bother sort of attitude, but it is good for the brain. All the research shows that the brain at any age is highly adaptable. Neurosurgeons call it plastic. Our brain/mind adores a challenge. The brain is active all the time, whether we are active or not.

The brain is probably the most complex organ in the body. Intellectual activity stimulates the growth of and connection of neurons or brain cells. Just like the body, the mind requires exercise or stimulation to build and strengthen the tree-branch like neuron system. Neurosurgeons suggest that any activity that stimulates or challenges you, or excites you like learning a new language, doing cross word puzzle, participating in debates, or learning a new technique keeps your mind young and supple. Dr. Michael Merzenich, neuroscientist of University of California says: “Your brain is a learning machine”. “Anything that closely engages your focus and is strongly rewarding” will kick your brain and notch it up” So any activity that requires high level of attention and focus can keep your brain in tip top condition.
There is lot of evidence which suggests that repetition is not good for the brain health, but novelty is.
