CREATIVE POWER OF SLEEP
Researchers at Hayward Medical School in a study involving maths, problems found that a good night’s sleep doubled participants’ chances of finding a creative solution to the problem. Next time you are working on a problem, ‘it really pays to sleep on it,’ take advantage of the creative benefit of sleep.
Many studies suggest that the brain uses a night’s sleep to consolidate the memories of actions and skills learnt during the day. A good night’s sleep acts as a kind of cement for our memories. Leonardo de Vinci (greatest figure of the Italian Renaissance) spent almost half of his life asleep. Like Einstein, he took naps during the day, in his case 15 minutes after every four hours.
Mid day snooze or siesta are coming into fashion gradually. Studies have shown that ‘power nap’ is good for us. It reverses the morning irritations, boredom, and frustration with mental tasks that we often feel.
There is evidence that suggests that sleep deprivation can lead to loss of IQ, memory, and the ability to reason. It is not worth punishing our bodies too hard, but better to live as nature intended and obtain adequate amount of sleep. (6 to 8 hours)
