If you have a problem identifying your highest Values, think about the characteristics you have or would like to cultivate as a person, a father/ mother, leader, team player and be a role model for others. Ask yourself:
• How do I want to live in this world?
• What values will make my life more fulfilling or meaningful?
All the values listed in the last article like charity, compassion, dignity, fairness, honesty humility love, peace respect, trust truth ,wisdom etc. are worthy of embodying and pursuing. It is for you to choose the ones which are very pertinent to you. It means that you have to take stock of yourself, what you believe in, and what kind of world you want to create for yourself, for your family, friends and even your community. Even though you are one person, your actions, thoughts and beliefs can make a difference to your network. The ripple effect will cascade to others. If you do well in life, at your work or in sports, your family and friends are happy for you. If you live a principled life, some will try to emulate you. It is the many “I’s” that make up the “we.”
You can decide to change your home or environment into a more peaceful and loving place for your children to inherit. It is your learning, practising and modelling of fairness, justice, kindness, love, spirituality, truth and wisdom that teach your children the same values.
Take a few minutes to identify your values, the ones that are most important to you. The purpose of finding your values is so that you can endeavour to practise and embody them in your life. Use the ‘My Highest Values’ exercise to go about cultivating them in yourself so that they serve you to have a meaningful and fulfilling life.
