Currently there are two types of professional coaching, - personal coaching and business coaching. Personal coaching is also known as life coaching, success coaching, personal development coaching, and career coaching among others. Business coaching is also known as corporate coaching, management coaching executive coaching and leadership coaching to mention just a few. Coaching can be delivered on a one to basis or through group work.
People from all walks of life use Life coaching to discover real freedom in their lives, to uncover their own answers and to unlock their potential. Personal coaching is a holistic process which considers any and all aspects of an individual’s life and situation. Business coaches normally specialize in working with business professionals, executives, managers and owners on a host of issues. This book restricts itself to personal development which incorporates career development and finding a Balance in life.
Many people initially mistake the coaching process with counseling or therapy. It is neither. Counselling is a process that is used to help an individual overcome a specific traumatic situation, for example bereavement. Therapy is a course of treatment delivered by a therapist to a patient. Personal or life coaching is not concerned with what has gone before. Counsellors and therapists may look to the past for answers. Life coaching is based on the present and the future. So a Life coach focuses on where the client is now and where they want to be in the future. Life coaching works with a wide range of individuals on a host of intrapersonal and interpersonal issues and helps them to achieve their dreams, make career transitions, and live a happier and more fulfilled life.
A Life coach brings all his or her training and experience to the coaching relationship, to help individuals to overcome conflict, to enhance their communication skills, and build better relationships. Coaching is not instructing an individual. For me, the coaching process is the art of getting the individual to identify their own answers to a stated situation and accepting personal responsibility for taking appropriate actions to resolve that situation.
A Coach partners you in identifying your inner most values and goals, to bring balance and achievement into your life. Coaching focuses on personal development rather than on accomplishing tasks. It helps people identify their unique strengths and weaknesses, tying these to a person’s personal and career developments. A Coach encourages people to establish long term goals and helps them to conceptualize a plan for reaching those goals. The Coach then acts as a catalyst to personal transformation and the client achieves his or her goals through a voyage of self discovery and personal responsibility.
