SETTING THE RIGHT GOALS
SETTING THE RIGHT GOALS
The primary cause of success in life is the ability to set and achieve goals. “That is why the people who do not have goals are doomed forever to work for those who do.” (Brian Tracy) Setting a goal puts us in control of our lives. We can make a promise and keep it, or we can set a goal and strive to achieve it. As we make and fulfil any commitments we undertake, we begin to establish an inner integrity, or an inner strength that raises our awareness of self-control and the boldness to accept responsibility for our lives.
Let us for a moment think as to why some people like top class sports men and women, self-made millionaires, and people who do well academically, succeed in life where as others with possibly equal talent do not. A closer study normally reveals that the successful ones have one thing in common. They have clear goals and are all extremely motivated. It takes strong personal commitment and drive to succeed in their field. Most of us do not attain our personal goals because we do not recognise the role of inner drive and motivation.
So it is vital to know what you want, in particular to understand what you really want as opposed to what you say you want. Many of us want to be rich. Winning the lottery is a quick fix, a panacea, but a pipe dream. We carry on dreaming about having lot of money, but we do not take time to consider why we want to be rich, or how much money we really want, and what we want to do with the money. There are many people who are not rich, or do not make it to the top of their profession, but lead worthwhile and fulfilling lives. If you want to be rich to enjoy life, you can do it anyway while working normal hours and devoting more time to your social and family relationships. You can find time to pursue your leisure activities also instead of wasting the productive years of your life in the pursuit of wealth.
I am not even for a moment saying that you should not have aspirations. As a matter of fact, I would like to encourage you to realise your dreams, and show you how to get there. However, I also want you to consider whether the goals you might set for yourself will lead to ultimate contentment.
If we don’t have a clear idea of our goals, our lives can become rather aimless. A Coach or a close associate can encourage you to be ambitious and motivated, which can help you to produce a personal transformation. A Coach should help you in your personal development, but at the same time explore with you the wider issues around the goals that you might set for yourself. Being clear of our goals is one of the most powerful motivating factors.
