STRESS-- A NATURAL RESPONSE?

Feelings of stress are triggered by our natural survival mechanism. The most basic and natural response to distress is the fight – or-flight reaction. Our ancestors had to do battles with the wild elements for survival. Most of us are engaged in overcoming the paper tiger in the work place. Our ancestors released the tension by running from the situation or fighting the wild animals. Adrenaline or epinephrine is released into the blood stream in situations of fear or stress. It increases the heart rate, increases the blood flow to the muscles, reduces blood flow to the skin with the production of sweat, and dilates the pupils of the eyes , generally preparing the body for ‘fight or flight. With our ancestors, it was a muscular action whether they ran or fought. It reduced the adrenaline in the blood which had increased to meet the situation, and the exercise stimulated the release of endorphins which act like opiates and reduce the perception of pain.

In modern life, quite often people cannot escape a stressful situation, they have to endure it or make the best of it.
