YOUR GOALS Goals are not scored only on football and hockey fields, we all try to attain our own goals too. They have a very wide meaning. We all make resolutions or set our own goals at the beginning of a year and within a few weeks, or even days they are forgotten. One reason for failing to keep the resolutions or achieve the goals is we lack motivation
Before setting a goal, it is vital to ask yourself as to whether you are prepared to devote yourself to achieving that particular goal. If it is about getting fit and healthy, then you might like to consider in depth the following questions:
• Why do you want to be in better shape?
• What benefits do you think will accrue if you are in a better shape?
• Are there certain tasks that you want to carry out but can’t do them at present?
• Do you want to be in a better physical condition because of what your partner or spouse has said?
The more you are prepared do something for yourself and the more it is in accordance with your core beliefs and values, the more likely you will achieve the goal.
Being crystal clear about your goals would assist you to persist with what you want to achieve. Quite often the reason people do not attain their goal is not that they do not desire the goal, but because there are other competing goals as well. So instead of doing your weight training or going out for a walk, you may wish to watch your favourite TV programme or enjoy that thriller or movie. In achieving one goal, we normally have to sacrifice another. You need to be sure the goals that you have set for yourself are really the right ones. Another sacrifice that you may have to make to be in better shape is reducing the number of calories you eat. If you eat food for comfort, can’t do without chocolates and sweets, you will have to fight the urge and discover for yourself as to why you need to consume them in large quantities. If you do not succeed in the beginning, do not be too hard on yourself. ‘Behaviour Change’ takes time.
Winning in any tough competitive situation, be it work, play or sport is in large measure determined by our mental attitude and this boils down to motivation. How motivated you are will determine how fit and healthy you become. If you are very motivated, it is likely that you will persist in the face of obstacles when in training. Remember that the people, who persist, are the ones who eventually succeed and look fantastic. It is no coincidence that the Outward Bound Mountain School, East Africa, where I worked for some time has this motto: Strive till you succeed. The school prepares students to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. It has an altitude of 5,900m or 19,364 ft.
