Reflections of Sept 11

Written by: Michael Jaffe

Article Overview: September brings with it both endings and beginnings. Summer has ended, a new school year has begun. 9/11 brought many dreams, wishes and lives to an end. However, rising up from that tragedy were many new beginnings. This article is dedicated to those who are no longer with us as well as those of us who are still very much alive and creating new beginnings in our lives everyday. Is today the day to make a new beginning for yourself?

Reflections of Sept 11

It’s just about noon here now and they’re still reading out the names. So many people.

But today, I don’t want to just dwell on the sadness. And my sadness is so much different than that felt by those who lost a husband or wife or mom or dad. But as I have said before, you can’t compare - it is all relative to ourselves, to our own experiences and lives.

No, today I will not dwell upon the sadness. I will try to understand and appreciate all of the good, all of the blessings, all of the beauty that has been created out of that event. I will remember how it felt to be back in the city after 9/11 and how everyone had an unwritten agreement that we would all take care of each other and that we would get through this.

Nobody had to say anything - we all said it with our eyes. And we all looked deep into each other in those days, whether stranger or friend, we were all blood. The heroism, the warmth, the love and the support was something I will never forget.

As I watched some of the shows last night on TV, one of the Fire Chiefs stated it perfectly, “In our saddest hour, it was our finest hour.” That was an extraordinary experience. For me, a real sadness is that it didn’t last.

But I did get to experience it. And I know what’s possible. And having experienced it and knowing it’s possible is what fuels me when I say to you that there is a way…that you can figure it out…that you don’t need to be stuck wherever you’re stuck. Everyday miracles are real and can happen. In those days after 9/11, everyone chose to come together and support each other. They chose.

It can happen. And it can happen for you too. Are you ready to choose?

It doesn’t mean that it is easy. In fact, it is usually much harder. That’s why it is so hard to choose. But it is possible. It just has to mean enough to you.

I still feel the sadness and I remember my friends. I will go to the memorial at Sherwood Island with my family and share with my kids little descriptions of everyone I knew that has a stone there - keeping them alive in my memory and sharing these wonderful people with my little ones. I have already hugged and kissed my wife and kids many, many times and I will continue to do so tomorrow.

Because that is the key. Tomorrow. Today, we have a lot of focus and many intentions. Today we relive an experience that served as a wakeup call for us. Today we remember again what’s important to us - we remember all the people we love. We realize that there may be things about our life that we want to change.

And we’ll start right away…tomorrow.

But tomorrow is September 12. And when you wake up tomorrow, will you have the same intentions and strength, and courage that you have today? Will you wake up with a renewed sense of purpose and vision and say “Today is the day I make my new beginning” ? Will you keep that fire alive that is inside your belly today and wake up and take the first step towards your intentions, no matter how small that step is?

Or will you wake up on what’s just another morning in September, summer over, school begun, lunches to make, meetings to go to, calls to make, things to clean, trains to catch, elevators to ride, places to drive to, shopping to do…and tell yourself that you’ll start again tomorrow or when it’s a little more convenient or when you have the time…

DON’T! Make a small decision and take a small step.

Martin Luther King Jr said, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”

I can’t tell you that it will save your life, but it might just feed your soul.

This article is based on the popular book and audio book, WakeUp: Your Life is Waiting for You by Mike Jaffe. Mike Jaffe, founder of Jaffe Life Design and renowned motivational speaker, is a powerful and inspiring coach and seminar leader whose programs empower people to redefine what’s possible in their personal and professional lives. Without doubt, the date of September 11th will live in every Americans mind as one of those moments when time stands still. For Mike Jaffe, that moment arrived on September 11th when he stepped out of the subway 20 minutes late for work, just after the first plane slammed into his office floor. At that moment, Mike Jaffe knew he had to change his life and the lives of others in honor of his co-workers. In Mike’s inspiring and powerful talks, participants learn what it takes to make real, lasting change in their businesses and their lives by shifting their perspective from entitlement to accountability; therefore, moving from victim to victor. Broken delivery guarantees Broken delivery guarantees - Hi Everyone, I recently had a bad online purchasing experience due delivery problems. A tennis retailer I ordered from had used FedEx's Standard Overnight shipping to try and deliver my package to my friend's place in NY on Friday, August 29th. However, since my friend was at work and the condo doorman was perhaps on a break, FedEx brought it back to their depot. Keep in mind that I was only in NY for the long weekend, so I wouldn't even be able to get my order when they try to make a 2nd delivery attempt. So what's the point of calling it "Overnight delivery" when I didn't end up getting my package the next day? Most residential addresses won't have anyone at home to accept parcels because everyone is at work, so why even bother trying to deliver something during the day if you can't leave it there? And get this, FedEx then tries to deliver the goods again on Tues, Sept 2nd but reports it's the "incorrect address" and there's no such place. But then how come they found condo on Aug 29th? My order was just shipping in their depot on Sept 3rd and according to their online tracking, it's supposed to be delivered sometime today on Sept 4th. We'll see. FedEx's Overnight shipping has turned into 3+ days shipping. What would you do? I was so infuriated that I wanted to just cancel the order and ask FedEx to return it back to the retailer. I've never had any of these sort of problems with UPS.

Re: What is your worst / best month? Re: What is your worst / best month? - Best months for my business are historically March/April/May & August/Sept/Oct Worst months: December/January (Holidays) & June/July (Vacations) I see our traffic go way up during the good months and way down during the bad months. Very cyclic. Keep in mind, my clients buy businesses and no one thinks of doing that during the holiday or during vacation.
How Can I Make Money Out of This Need? How Can I Make Money Out of This Need? - I came across an interesting piece of news while surfing the web today. A site called Mortgage Loan Place had this paragrpah: If you bought your home after Sept. 1, 1983 with a FHA loan, chances are you had to purchase mortgage insurance. The FHA was supposed to refund that insurance back to you if you made all of your payments and have paid off your mortgage. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) says that approximately 30 percent of those refunds never get claimed. $450 million waiting to be claimed And there is a search box there where you input a last name, and a list of all the people with that last name who are owed money by the FHA comes up. Most of those people seem to be owed only a couple of hundred dollars, but some are owed over a thousand dollars. And the records cover everybody from 1983 onward... So I'm wondering... is there any point in contacting these people (their addresses are given), telling them that they've forgotten to claim this refund? The thing is... that would be the good samaritan thing to do... but I'm wondering if there's any way to monetize the service. All I can do is tell the people they're due a refund - they just have to apply for it, so it's not like I'd actually be providing any kind of service, except one of information dissemination. Anyone have any thoughts?
