What Mask Are You Wearing?

It has been said that the eyes are the window to our souls. Unfortunately so many people wear masks to hide who they are that no one ever gets to see their beautiful soul. Sadly enough, not only does no one else get to know the real them, but they often go through life wondering who they themselves are because they have lost touch with their own selves from spending so much of their lives wearing a mask and pretending to be someone they are not.

We often begin wearing a mask for protection but who are we really protecting ourselves from, the world around us or our own selves? Are we trying to hide who we are or how we feel? Or could we be wearing a mask in hopes of becoming something we are not?

There can be times when pretending to be something isn’t always a bad thing. Of course we wear different hats, there’s nothing wrong with that and wearing a badge of courage or faith are good too. They can help us through any situation. I even believe that pretending to be confident can often lead to actually being confident. Just as putting on a happy face when inside we don’t feel very happy can often lift our mood. So when is it bad? When you wear a mask and don’t ever let anyone know who you really are. When you need help but are too ashamed to ask for it. When you look at your life and feel that you’re living a lie. When wearing a mask begins to hurt you, then it is time to take it off.

So I challenge you to take that mask off and put it away. It’s time to find out who you really are inside. Let your soul speak to you and don’t be afraid to be yourself. Be proud of it and be confident enough to allow the person who is inside to come out and show the world who it is. Go ahead and put on a different hat, it’s great to be many things, but don’t hide your soul. Let everyone see the beauty that is inside. Don’t be afraid to take off the mask.

Throw out the guilt Throw out the guilt - Lately I have been struggling with the guilt of sometimes putting my business first over my 3 year old. Long ago, we decided it was better that he was in daycare (now preschool), even though I worked from home. Oh the guilt! I should have him home with me and we could bake cookies and I'd teach him his fourth language! But where would my business be? And I'm not a good cookie maker. I finally decided that I couldn't listen to the pressures of the outside world. What works for me is that he is in school while I earn my daily bread. I can focus 100% on my business, and then 100% on him when he gets home. I thus maintain my sanity. I'm reading a book called "The Mask of Motherhood" that I highly recommend. It's by Susan Maushart, and talks about how we all pretend it's easy to juggle work and family, but really we're all struggling.
