In general the tendency of people is to push so fast through life that they miss a vital element of their pursuit. What is it they truly desire? This is especially true in the corporate world.
The nature of business is competitive and fast. The first one to the top gets the prize. Many successful businesspeople are so intent on the climb of the corporate ladder that often when they arrive at the top they realize they climbed the wrong ladder; or possibly they climbed too high on this ladder.
It hits them, "Oops! I am a CFO, but what I really wanted was to be a teacher." As they reflect back they recognize the signs they missed...the coach who encouraged them to lead and mentor, the intense pleasure they experienced in college as they witnessed success of their tutoring...all missed in their push through life. Or possibly, "Oops! I am President but this is not what I would have chosen; I want to be hands-on, using my strengths and abilities." To quote Skip Yowell of JanSport, "...But in your pursuit of the corner office, if you discover that your passion lies midway up the corporate ladder, stop climbing."
There's nothing wrong with the pursuit of the corner office or money or achievement, or whatever it is you call success. It's only a problem when the act of the pursuit of success blinds you of what you really want.
It's all about slowing down and recognizing the signs along the way. Noticing and recognizing allows us to make choices.
Working hard and having goals are good things, especially in terms of climbing the corporate ladder. But you need to be mindful of what you are pursuing.
It is never too late to find a new rung or climb a different ladder.
