How is the Attitude – Have you Amazed those around you yet?

Most of you did not do it, in fact, it would greatly surprise me if more than 1% actually did it. But, that is also why only 1% or the people attain great success, only 1% really achieve all they can. Only 1% lead the rest.

The interesting thing to note is that as business owners, entrepreneurs, executives, sales people and others, we are always trying to figure out why our people are not working as hard as us. I constantly have business owners asking me, “how come my staff doesn’t see it, how come they are gone at 5PM and I am still here at 9PM. How come they don’t buy in the way I do. Help me please.

How about Attitude?
How about your attitude?
How about creating a great attitude that is contagious and so contagious that people start to ask you, “how do you do it, your team is rocking, why can’t I do that”.

I love the term super attitude; it defines what you need to make your team the best.
Let’s face it; we are in business to make money. Attitude drives you and the team to do the things you need to, to do them well, to be the best at what you do. Great attitude drives making money.

To many times we make the mistake of letting the circumstance drive our attitude. We cannot control the circumstances; we can only control what happens to us and our business up to a certain level, after that, we have to deal with it. But we can control our attitude; we can control our attitude 100 percent. But even greater, when we control our attitude, then we effect all those around us, we effect their attitude as well.

Let’s see just how this might work.
We are a small software company and have just found out that the bid we put in for a major contract was rejected. We did not get the deal. It would have meant a 50% increase in our sales. We bring our team of 4 together, everyone is really bummed out. As the leader of the pack, what would you do? Here are two ways it could be handled.

1. You come into the meeting, sad look on your face. “Can you believe we didn’t get this deal, this is terrible, we were the best, I know someone paid someone off, I know we got the shaft”. You partner jumps in, “what a waste of our time, look at all the effort we put in”. The tech leader jumps in, “what a waste”. Soon the entire company is spending the day, and the next 3 days bummed out and unproductive. Meanwhile, new proposals and opportunities just sit there as you whine.

2. You come into the meeting with a package for another bid. “I know you are unhappy we lost the deal, but get over it. We lost the deal, life goes on. First let’s look at what we learned in the process, then let’s get started on this new proposal we have.” Your partner jumps in, “I know we have been working hard and I would love to take a break, but we have more proposals, so who can work this weekend”. The tech leader jumps in, “my team is here with you, let’s rock”. Soon the entire company is focused on the next proposal; they have not lost a step.

As I ask last time, what is the difference? As a leader, you need to set the attitude. What attitude are you setting for your team? Stop whining, stop looking for a reason, just get that attitude in line and get your company rolling.

Re: What to do at the first roadblock? Re: What to do at the first roadblock? - Upon first discouragement, dig in and see if things are as they seem. Sometimes, even though there are several products out there that appear comparable, they are no match. Maybe they do don't a good job of what they are intended for, or maybe there are several glitches in their system, or perhaps their customer service just plain stinks. Decide how you can "one up" all of these things and decide that you are going to create a better product that more people would want. Attitude is 95% of the battle. If you feel defeated before you've done any research on any of the other products, you're doing yourself a huge disservice. Give yourself a chance and see if you can be the BEST in every way. This will get you far no matter what the venture.
Re: Who hates cold calling? Re: Who hates cold calling? - About 15 years ago I worked for this sales company that used to sell anything from Kitchen Knives to Dry Cell Torches. The owner was a very motivating guy and he would ask us to get to the office by 7.00AM and we could sing and dance for an hour before we went to sell the products in the streets, stopping anyone and telling them our products were on discount. We used to sell snow to Eskimos, why were we able to do that? because of PMA (Positive Mental Attitude). The key to cold calling is like beauty, in eyes of the beholder. If you have no PMA, you cannot sell. Remember the law of average that states that if you went to a dance and every girl or guy you approached for a dance decline your proposal. What do you do? Do you stop? If you have a PMA, you continue until you get one person who agree to dance with you despite how ugly you look, that is is PMA and that is the power of cold calling.
