Real Leadership Requires Absolutes
You can't lead by taking a survey. Even though many people today think
you can.
You can't lead by being afraid of what people will think of the decision.
You have to learn early that leadership requires some people not liking
the decisions you make.
You can't lead from a seesaw - you have to be able to stand firm. Nothing
worse than a leader who keeps changing his/her mind and never seems to
stand for anything.
Leadership requires earned respect.
You can't please everyone, deal with it, accept it and move on. Leading will
be much easier for you.
Real leadership requires a personal set of standards which you have to keep,
even when it seems to suck to do so. A set of standards by which you live
your life and by which you operate. You have to determine your priorities
in life, what and who comes first, second, etc and what you will and will not
do. Once you have this defined, then making decisions comes much easier
because you have a set of standards to process the decision against.
So what has this got to do with with today's subject, execution? Only
everything.
You see execution is the time you test real leadership. Execution requires
leadership. To make it happen, you have to make the tough decisions,
you have to put yourself out there and you have to walk the walk
The "E" in Success stands for Execution
So far in our study of success, we have gotten serious, we have defined
the vision, we have developed the plan and now, we need to make it
happen, we need to execute the plan. To many times this never happens.
Not just in business, but also in life. We have great plans laid out, but
when it comes to making them happen, nothing happens.
To execute you have to become the leader and you have to make decisions.
If you have that solid base, that set of standards for making your decisions,
then making those decisions becomes so much easier. There is nothing as
frustrating as a person in a leadership role who cannot make a decision.
Creflow Dollars puts it very simply: "Do not allow your feelings to govern
your decisions. Else you will be tossed all over the place."
Should I, shouldn't I. How will John feel? How will Mary take it? Will Jim
stop liking me?
Stop, based on your standards, do it, or don't do it.
Remember the words of Joyce Meyer: "You cannot drive a parked car".
Make a decision, move forward, execute and make it happen. To many
people in leadership positions simply are sitting in that parked car waiting
for a tow truck.
Is it fear that keeps you from moving forward? If so, take a moment and
think about what Emerson said:, "Do the things you fear and the death
of fear is certain."
Stop holding back. As Maurice Chevalier says, "If you wait for the perfect
moment when all is safe and all is assured, it may never arrive. Mountains
will not be climbed, races won, or lasting happiness achieved - so go
ahead and do it anyway."
How many of us know those in leadership positions who seem to be waiting
for that perfect moment. It is totally frustrating. Then there are those of us
who have learned the magic formula, "that many times it is easier to ask
for forgiveness, than to ask for permission".
If you keep looking for an excuse for not executing you will keep coming
up with one. Remember the words of Michael Hage, "An excuse is nothing
but a lie camouflaged by a reason". Start executing, make a decision and
start making your plan a reality. If you didn't believe the plan, why did
you write it? If you don't believe the vision, then replace with with one
you do believe.
Stop hesitation, go forward. You now have the vision and plan, and you
have already committed that you are serious, so go out and execute the
plan.
