Coaching Tip: Identify Your Core Values

Written by: Lorraine Cohen

Article Overview: Your values are the principles, beliefs and attitudes that guide your decisions, actions and behaviors. Your core values reflect who you are and represent your heart. They define and distinguish who you are as a person – what matters most to you, what you stand for (and stand on) as your inner foundation. When you act in a way that is in conflict with your heart, your life feels more like a struggle, unhappiness grows, you can feel disconnected from your SELF. When you make choices and take actions that line up with your values, you will experience greater peace and abundance.

Coaching Tip: Identify Your Core Values

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

One of the first places I start with new clients is doing values work. Many people have never even thought about what their values are. Have you? I mean really looked at your values?

Why is it important?

Your values are the principles, beliefs and attitudes that guide your decisions, actions and behaviors.

According to works of Louis E. Raths, Sidney B. Simon, Merrill Harmin, Howard Kirschenbaum and Leland Howe (The VALUES REALIZATION INSTITUTE), a value must meet seven criteria:

1. It must be prized and cherished
2. It must be chosen from among alternatives
3. It must be chosen freely, without coercion
4. It must be chosen after thoughtful consideration of the consequences of each alternative, not impulsively, and after careful critical thinking.
5. We must be willing to publicly affirm it
6. We must act on it, and act on it repeatedly
7. It must be consistent with the other values we profess or claim to hold
So, do you know what you value most? What do your care about deeply and passionately?

I suggest writing down your 5-10 core values – the ones that represent the essence of who you are. Next, define them so they aren’t just words on a page. Create language to capture the spirit of each value – what does it mean to you – AS YOU?

For example:

Integrity is a core value for me. My definition is: “Showing up” and taking 100% responsibility for my thoughts, feelings, and actions in all areas of my life. Sharing my gifts, talents, passions, and skills in service to humanity.

Give yourself some time to refine your definitions so you reveal the heart of what each value means to you. (It’s not unusual for me to work with clients for several weeks on this exercise!).

Starting a New Business Starting a New Business - I think magonaga identified one of the most important ingredients for starting a new business in its simplest terms...."Sheer bloody tenacious determination". The only thing that I would add to this is the need for a plan. There are many methodologies for planning, but I believe that the most effective is also the simplest.
Step back from the excitement and anxiety, close your eyes and visualize your goal Identify all of the ingredients (e.g. office/store, legal paperwork, contracts, products) that you need to make your vision a reality Identify all of the ingredients that you need to get the previous ingredients (equipment, training, partnerships, mentors, marketing materials) Prioritize all of the ingredients Sketch out a timeline for how all of these ingredients come together to achieve your goal Execute the timeline...with a liberal dose of magonaga's advice
When all is said and done in the realm of planning, take heed of Dwight D. Eisenhower's advice "Plans are nothing. Planning is everything". Even though your timeline may not go as planned, the fact that you devoted the time towards planning will help you understand the impacts of changes to your plan and react more effectively to unforeseen events. May God bless you in your endeavors!
Re: Twiiter an sales Re: Twiiter an sales - Lots of different ways soldlab. I would start with: 1) Identify your ideal accounts and see if they're on Twitter. Get to know them and what they're interested in. Reply to their tweets and get on their radar screens. Before long they'll be checking out your profile and will be curious as to what you're selling. 2) Follow key words that relate to your industry. Find people who have a problem that you can solve and offer to help. Get involved in the discussion around your industry and be seen as an expert. Good luck!
Re: Kevin's Case Study #7 - How do you promote your new book? Re: Kevin's Case Study #7 - How do you promote your new book? - Hey! Shri you Rock! The only thing I would add is something I have personally found to be very profitable, and that is centres of influence. Identify people who are selling/promoting into the same target market as you and get them to recommend you. I've also done a lot of list building and promotion leading up the release of the book. In fact, I had sold 100 copies before it was even finished. I highly recommend Shri's book too! Great resource. Jude
Re: need pricing help please Re: need pricing help please - here's my opinion that was derived from the person I heard it from (Russell Brunson) I view internet Marketing products as a Ladder. At the bottom of the Ladder is ebooks and at the top is One on One Coaching. so the ladder would look like this starting from the Top ($$$) to Bottom($) One-to-One Coaching ($$$$$$) Workshops ($$$$$) Teleseminars ($$$$) Video($$$) Audio ($$) ebooks ($) I agree with this methodology mainly because of the convenience factor and value from the customers point of view.
