The Essential Key to Managing Stress

How do you know you are stressed? For most of us, we can tell by our mood and behaviour. For others, the symptoms may be less obvious. Here are some signs and symptoms to be on the look out for.

Physical…headaches sleep problems, indigestion, dizziness, racing heart, neck or back pain.

Behavioural…overuse of nicotine and alcohol, overeating, grinding of teeth, critical attitude of others.

Cognitive…inability to make decisions, forgetfulness, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, constant worry and a lack of sense of humour.

Emotional…crying, emotional outbursts, feelings of anger, hopelessness, irritability, feeling powerless and feeling overwhelmed with life’s demands, anxiety, excessive guilt.

So where is our stress coming from? Well, in today’s world, it can come from many sources. Some examples are-

External or environmental…such as traffic, weather, noise, workload, deadlines, a family crisis, lay offs, conflicts, change in relationships, financial crisis.

Internal or individual sources…such as illness, aging process, low self-esteem, perfectionism, negativity, and guilt.

Societal…as in keeping up with the Joneses, perfectionist parent, single parenting, dual careers, neighbours and aging parents .

As far as stress management goes, many of you already are familiar with the majority of ways in which you can manage daily stressors. Some of which are proper nutrition, regular exercise, relaxation techniques, positive attitude, support systems, etc.

The challenge however is in implementing some of these. This is where the ONE thing you must do to manage stress comes in. The one thing needed to deal with the stressors of living is ACTION. All the other things I have mentioned will be of no use if you do not take action towards them. Stress is often magnified because we get immobilized by it and end up becoming so overwhelmed we do nothing.

So, if you are feeling overwhelmed by stress, pick something and take action toward it. Action absorbs overwhelm. It can be as simple as a daily 20 minute walk, coffee with a friend, evening with your partner, warm bath before bed, etc. Just pick something! The action may even be something you choose not to do, for example resign from a committee, delegate some of your workload or hire a housekeeper. Action can also be as simple as making a commitment to change some things in your life. Deciding is an action.

The important thing is that you don’t allow yourself to become stuck in stress. Choose to take action. All changes come from it.

What is your action for today? Remember, you get to choose.

Re: Infographic: The 4 Main Stress Factors Re: Infographic: The 4 Main Stress Factors - I'd like to reference that article in my next blog post as well.. I worked in sales for years and found that days when I was positive, relaxed where days that it was easy to sell. On days that I was stressed I found I would not reach target. Stress is good at times, but it very easily becomes problematic. I do a lot of very physical exercise and work now, to manage it.
