Change Is a Life or Death Matter

Written by: Les Brown

Article Overview: People resist change, even when it's beneficial. Even when we try to make a difference, too often we do not succeed. Perhaps the problem lies in the starting point. Change begins when we begin to refocus our own awareness. All personal and professional change is an inside job.

Change Is a Life or Death Matter

In the May, 2005 issue of Fast Company magazine, the lead article was entitled "Change or Die". It contained some pretty scary statistics. It seems that over 90% of all people who have been told that their medical condition requires them to change their personal habits -- or else -- either fail to change them at all, or, within a short time, revert back to their old habits.
Research is showing that, in order for real change to occur, it must be presented to the implementer in terms that are "simple, easy to identify with, emotionally resonant, and evocative of positive experiences." Furthermore, continues the article, the change effort needs to be "positive, inspiring, and emotionally resonant." The goal is to bring reflection, emotional intelligence (EQ) and even spiritual intelligence (SQ) into arenas where, until recently, they were at best suspect, and, at worst unwelcome.
Finally, the article presents data that shows that gradual, incremental change just doesn't work. Real (that is: purposeful) change requires something more. Change that works, change that "sticks" is most often what we call "quantum change". Quantum change is what shakes us out of our comfort zone and our habitual routines; it catapults us into a new vision, a new direction, and a new way of life.
It’s a fine thing to have these deep thoughts and to see new connections among the disparate facets of our perception. It’s exhilarating to experience new realizations for the first time. When that happens in our heads (or in our hearts) it may cause tiny ripples around us in the pool of our lives. That’s not enough. That’s not the earthquake we call quantum change. We all have insights that can be transformative, but what can we do to leverage them to truly make a difference?
The first lesson that anyone who wishes to create purposeful change needs to learn is that change is not an option. Try as you might, you can’t stop it or turn it back. The one constant in life is change, so we have to work with it rather than in opposition to it. In addition, the starting point for changing the world is changing yourself. That’s where you have to start if you want to become an effective person and a successful professional. It’s not begging the question; and it’s useless to ask impatiently, “When will I get to do make some real changes?” I assure you: the quantum changes start when you start changing yourself.

So are you currently a member? And more importantly, have you tried to open a store front in that virtual world?
Re: Charge what you're worth Re: Charge what you're worth -
People will pay you what you ask. Very few will ever up the price. You are the one who decided what you are worth. The key is that we believe our services are worth the price we are asking.[/quote:292ze3jd] Hi Tami, You're absolutely right. In "Think and Grow Rich", Jessie B. Rittenhouse says "For Life is a just employer, He gives you what you ask, But once you have set the wages, Why, you must bear the task. I worked for a menial's hire Only to learn, dismayed , That any wage I had asked of Life, Life would have willingly paid" (Napoleon Hill 35). I think the same can be said when setting prices on eBay or Craigslist, especially when people are trying to haggle you.
Re: Spellcheck? Re: Spellcheck? -
When discussing the majority of people I would definitely say that most people hit the "Change" or "Ignore" button without thinking too much about the correct spelling of a word. All bosses are concerned about is getting the report to the Directors meeting on time.[/quote:2f894q6j] That probably depends on what the "majority" are trying to accomplish. I have word set to alert me about misspellings and grammatical problems, so I fix most as I go. But I also add names etc to the dictionary because I get tired of seeing the red and green squiggles when I know the info is right. If you're only going to click "Change" or "Ignore" then why bother to take the time to use spell check????? Business people that I work for want the info compiled in a timely manner and they want it right - which is fine because that's the way I strive to do any project. Sending out a memo, letter, report etc with obvious spelling and grammatical mistakes makes the person and the company look bad as far as I'm concerned. Shri
Re: Favorite Christmas movies Re: Favorite Christmas movies -
I do have to say I've never liked[i:1rxsgr0t] It's A Wonderful Life[/i:1rxsgr0t]. He spends all his life having his hopes and dreams shattered, feeling miserable, and its only at the end of his life that he can look back and realize how many friends he has, etc. But that doesn't change the fact that up until that point he was miserable![/quote:1rxsgr0t] I love the sentimentality around watching that movie with your Mom! Chtistmas is made up of all those sentimental things. "It's A Wonderful Life" is all about perspective, much in the same way that Scrooge is 'realigned' in Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" - which I listen to on CD every year (sometimes twice!) Happy Christmas Everyone! Regards Martin
