The Confidence to Let Go

Guest post by: Jeannie Campanelli, Ed.D., CPCC

Article Overview: It’s a challenge to really let go of our own private agendas. In working with clients, I often explore each opposite: “I want it my way” and “I let go”. These two points of view can fight it out within all of us and show up in our relationships with others.

The Confidence to Let Go

Becoming aware of what stops us from letting go is a valuable first step on the journey toward inner confidence. What stops you from letting go even when you know it's the wisest path? Could it be that you're afraid if you let go, you will lose control? Chaos might result? Your agenda might be lost? You won't get what you think you want? Is it the fear of change that keeps you hanging on even when something isn't working? Our conditioning, old habits, and over-active minds which live in the past or future limit our ability to open to what's here for us right now. For most of us, what we really, really want is inner peace, love, and contentment - what inner confidence is all about. When the mind is fighting it out, love and inner peace isn't what we experience!

For instance, many of us can listen to the conditioning that says we're supposed to get into action - any responsible person would. It's our job to be in control. We're really in charge of our lives. We need to be in control or else everything will fall apart. When we listen to these thoughts, our anxiety drives how we behave. Our thinking stops us from...simply letting go.

Take a moment and write down all the perspectives that come to your mind about letting go. Then write down the perspectives that support the opposite point of view: I want it my way. What are you discovering about yourself? What body sensations are you noticing as you explore the truth of your thoughts?

This simple act of questioning the mind paves the way for us to get into the present moment - fertile ground for letting go. Why? It is in the present where we get connected to our body's sensations and to the truth that lies in our hearts. It is in the present where our minds land in the place of "I really don't know". It is in the present where we then start to truly listen to what our lives have to tell us.

What I know is that there are times in my life that I didn't listen to logic. I made a decision to take action - or not - simply because I felt an energetic pull. In other words, my mind didn't win the vote as I surrendered to a deeper knowing within myself. I let go.

For example, I followed my gut in marrying my first husband although there were signs that told me, logically-speaking, that it wasn't a good idea. There were many challenges for me on this path. From the vantage point of where I am now, looking back, this marriage was perfect and in no way a mistake. I learned so much that helps me do the work that I do. I gained great strength and a deep sense of my own resourcefulness in standing on my own. For me, the experience was priceless and, I believe, part of my destiny.

What times in your life did you not listen to the voice of reason and instead listened to a deep part of yourself? When did you let go by listening to the part of you that lives in the stillness, the part beyond the mind? What were the results from this deep level of listening? What was it like to release the need to figure it all out with your mind? What was there for you when you surrendered?

When you experience your life through the practice of letting go, there are great advantages for you. Life becomes less serious and much more simple. There is less angst over making decisions. You discover life works out in its own way - the way that is part of your destiny.

Boosting Confidence Boosting Confidence - Confidence is something all of us women could stand to have infused in our blood 24/7! It’s one of those areas that many struggle with the most. Through my coaching practice, I’ve discovered an underlying thread that seems to undermine confidence in some women. It has to do with confusing true confidence with pride or arrogance. Confidence is being sure of who you are and what you are able to do in a way that does not compare yourself to others. It is not dependent on value because every one of us women is valuable. Pride or arrogance is when someone lifts him or herself above others as if they are more valuable than others. It also seems to be related to "approval addiction" where the self esteem must continually be fed by others or they don't feel good about themselves. Thus, some arrogant people put others down so they can see themselves as above. Confidence is simply being all of the great woman you already are. You want to create a great business and you want to do your job well. It is not prideful to be confident in what you are doing. I invite you to give yourself permission to really let your abilities come forward and see what happens to you and your business as a result. I’d also love to hear what methods you have for boosting your own confidence.
Re: Training and Self Development Re: Training and Self Development - Lets dust this one off Offline, budget and TIME, I feel are the reasons Training and Development take a second seat to building your business. Few start ups business have employees and the 1 or 2 partners are busy getting their business off the ground so the loss of 1 to training is a loss of a working partner Start ups are seldom well capitalized until they reach a certain growth and can offer proof of their business model to Angel or Venture Capital Funding - then they have to perform to meet the requirements of the funder. Angel are more ideal because they understand the important of personal development and often may be the source of your further development and training Offline Chamber of Commerce and related organizations offer training, but normally during your business hours and a often at a cost prohibitive for a start-up - I started a dozen companies and never had time or budget for such offerings - SO WHAT IS WRONG THE LIBRARY? Obviously that comment and I were before the INTERNET. So now we have both the LIBRARY and the INTERNET to source our training - FREE I start every Business Plan and Marketing workshop with a personal NEEDS ANALYSIS. We are looking for entrepreneur suitability, skill sets, etc, While Passion, Confidence, Attitude and Commitment are more difficult to change in a workshop - Awareness can be heightened, Take aways include a personal development plan. Yes would be Entrepreneurs can be trained to be entrepreneurs, but the person has to be open to assessment and honest in identifying their shortfalls. Better still Entrepreneurship is not an end itself as the business grows - either train yourself or turn the company over to corporate guru. How many companies ultimately fail because the entrepreneur would not turn lose of the reigns Be honest with your needs, take time for your needs development! INTERNET INTERNET, where you when I went to college? YOU can do learn and do anything and with the INTERNET and FORUMS such as this are ideal for LEARNING your TRADE Budget, what budget, EXPERTS here share and help you for FREE, all your need it TIME
Re: Boosting Confidence Re: Boosting Confidence - Kevin, I am so glad you asked that question! It's the missing link for so many people (and a huge key to confidence and entrepreneurial endurance). Since you asked the question hypothetically, when I say "you", I'm not meaning you personally, Kevin (unless you identify with it). Our purpose is like our personal mission statement. It's something we need to consciously sit down and think about. The problem is that so many have blocked their own voice and focused on outside influence instead. We need to practice listening to our own inner self. Confidence is found within so this is where we need to start. It means we need to trust that we actually do have the answers to what it is we need to know for our own personal success. They key to our purpose is actually tied in with what we really love to do. To start discovering what your purpose is, start discovering what you are really passionate about. Then begin asking yourself what you would love to do that would make a huge difference in that particular area. For example, if you love technology and also desire to help people, ask yourself how you can really help people using your technology. If your business is already established, start considering how you can develop the next phase of it to match your sense of purpose. Perhaps it's even time to delegate your work so that you can be freed up to pursue what you REALLY love to do. The great side effect is that most of us do a far better job at what we love to do anyway. Many people don't even get to this point because they disqualify their sense of passion and purpose before they even really discover the way to build financial success based on what they love to do. Some consider it a "pipe dream", but I say, "Why not?" You mention money, but what some people don't realize is that you must discover you purpose or your personal mission FIRST if you are to tap into passion to create the kind of wealth that is really satisfying. If you talk to people with money, you will discover that financial success is not what truly makes you happy. Satisfaction is the key ingredient. Developing a business which matches your passion and your purpose ensures you will enjoy the success when you get there. When you pursue developing your business from this place, confidence comes along side you because you are aware you have a personal mission to help others or create change in some way. It takes the focus off you and gives you confidence to overcome what could seem like incredibly challenging obstacles. If you are simply chasing money, there will come a point that you will really question if it is all even worth it. You may be faced with this question regardless, but if you have purpose, you often find the fortitude to really press forward anyhow. I hope that answers your question, Kevin. Warm regards, Tami
