5 Steps to Embracing Your Inner Genius
Genius isn't just about IQ.
Each of us has within us a spark of genius that we can use to get us closer to our goals and to leading the lives we are meant to live. We simply need to choose to honour those actions and behaviours that are in alignment with that spark.
Here are five simple habits that will help you embrace and honour your inner genius.
- Trust yourself.
You won't start anything and you won't take any risks if you don't believe that you have the capacity to complete it. Trust that you have within you the stamina and drive to make it to the end, and more than that, trust that you will find the people, resources, and skills that you need along the way. The other component of trusting yourself is: listen to your inner voice/gut response. Your first response is unfiltered by the conscious mind and self-talk, and listening to it will serve you well.
- Don't be afraid to fail.
This is closely tied to the first one, but there is a difference. I may believe that I have the basic capacity to complete a task in general, and yet still have the fear that I will fail in this specific quest. As Wayne Gretzky put it: You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take.
Besides, what is really there to fear in failure? Other people's opinions? If you have people around you who laugh at your failure, then you have the wrong people in your life. Upgrade them.
Bonus Tip: Accept that not everyone is a healthy and positive influence on your life, then choose to surround yourself with people who will cheer you on. When you place a higher value on your contribution to a relationship you will attract new people into your life. The company you keep is a major factor in changing your life.
- Admit when you were wrong and learn from it.
This is the difference between people who move forward and those who learn the same lesson over and over - or simply stop trying. As long as you learn something from the experience it is not truly a failure.
You may look at this as simply a shift in attitude, or as playing games with semantics, either way this is the habit that will propel you to greater and greater heights.
- Watch your language.
For starters, stop saying, "I'll never be able to do that." Except in very rare cases, this is just not true. You may not be interested in learning how to do a particular thing, or it may take a long time to become proficient at it, but the reality is you could do it eventually. Take this phrase out of your vocabulary immediately, and be honest with yourself what the truth of the situation really is, whether it is, "I am not motivated to learn this," or, "I am unwilling to try this right now."
It is simultaneously empowering and enlightening to realize how much responsibility we each bear for our own success.
- Take Care of Your Brain's Physical Needs Too!
Your brain has fundamental biological needs. Getting enough sleep, water, and the right foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids - all are critical factors to keeping your brain in peak condition.
You wouldn't expect to win a race with a broken leg, and you shouldn't expect your brain to produce the best results without enough fats and hydration. (Nuts, salmon, and other cold-water fish are good sources of Omega-3.)
