Change, accept or walk away?

A process I often use in my coaching practise is ' Change, Accept or Walk Away'. This is a great process to use when you are unsure what action to take or when you can't seem to decide what you need to do to resolve a particularly tricky situation.

One of my clients recently discussed with me the fact that she was finding it very difficult to work with a particular work colleague who she found to be negative and a gossip. This had been going on for several months and my client was starting to resent this individual and was doing her very best to avoid her whenever possible!

So, we began to look to see what options my client had in dealing with this person.

First we looked at CHANGE.

Was it possible to CHANGE the situation? What options were available for change?

We both agreed that we couldn't change this individuals behaviour but we could make some changes ourselves! These included:

We then looked at ACCEPT.

Was it possible to accept the situation? What options were available to acceptance?

Finally, we looked at WALK AWAY?

Was this situation so bad that we needed to walk away? Did we need to start looking for alternative employment?

One of the beneficial things about this process is that it can force us to take responsibility and get out of blame mode. Try it the next time you need to resolve an issue!

Re: Facebook friends Re: Facebook friends - I guess a lot of people will want to have different Facebook accounts for different faces, just as with Twitter. In my case, I doubt I'd ever get around to managing more than one Facebook account so I accept friends and business buddies but I don't usually accept requests from people I don't know. I hide some posts that are nothing more than classified ads, but if someone has something interesting to say, I let it stand.
Re: Spellcheck? Re: Spellcheck? - [quote="TheAnonymousMan":2f894q6j]When discussing the majority of people I would definitely say that most people hit the "Change" or "Ignore" button without thinking too much about the correct spelling of a word. All bosses are concerned about is getting the report to the Directors meeting on time.[/quote:2f894q6j] That probably depends on what the "majority" are trying to accomplish. I have word set to alert me about misspellings and grammatical problems, so I fix most as I go. But I also add names etc to the dictionary because I get tired of seeing the red and green squiggles when I know the info is right. If you're only going to click "Change" or "Ignore" then why bother to take the time to use spell check????? Business people that I work for want the info compiled in a timely manner and they want it right - which is fine because that's the way I strive to do any project. Sending out a memo, letter, report etc with obvious spelling and grammatical mistakes makes the person and the company look bad as far as I'm concerned. Shri
Re: Anyone Uses Elance.com? Guru.com? Rentacoder.com? Re: Anyone Uses Elance.com? Guru.com? Rentacoder.com? - I do understand your frustration- I think these two companies are after more money as they have been around for more than 7 years now. They seem not to care anymore about the customers. I have been using them for a while and I guess I had to cancel my subscription- Too many under-skilled consultants bid on projects and in the end projects get canceled. I recently came across ivoireconsultancy.org which is a business consultancy management site- I send in my CV and apparently they only accept highly skilled professionals- The business have been growing and they are about to launch a new website from the 25 of December 2008 same as Elance, but with new and innovative features. One thing is that people will not bid on projects, but only get invited by buyers depending on your work experience- You do not have to pay to get registered as they do not accept open registration. I guess we will need more competition from now on.
Online payment systems?? Online payment systems?? - If you got yourself a standard merchant account and set up a payment gateway, you'd be working within the terms of the account and gateway. I.e. - Some have flat fees, some charge percentages, some charge per transaction. Really, any time you use a credit card to accept payment, there will be some percentage fee. If you are doing large volumes, do you need to accept credit cards or can you set up accounts with payment terms? I don't know anyone that does large volumes on a credit card.
