Why Do Certain People Press Our Hot Buttons? - By Lisa Phillips

Do you have habits, issues, situations and people in your life which continue to cause you upset and frustration? Are you stuck in a rut continuing in the same old patterns where nothing changes? Are you feeling hopeless and frustrated that things will never improve? If so, I ask you, how many more months; years are you going to continue with these issues?

Do you wish your life was different in some way or that things could change for you? Are you sick of looking in at life from the outside wishing things were different or in some way YOU were different?

This is a common issue which is often supported by thoughts of ‘It’s all too hard’ or ‘I can’t change this’. Let me tell you – this is just an excuse!!! We all have the power to make positive choices to change our lives and to take responsibility for our own circumstances and happiness.

This month, I would like you to take on a challenge – to actively make a decision to change ONE area of your life which you are not happy with. This could be an emotion, a situation or a relationship – the choice is yours!

To take this action requires some courage and a willingness to give up our excuses on why we can’t change. Can you imagine how fabulous you will feel waking up in 30 days time knowing that you have taken responsibility for your own life and changed things for the better? Imagine how you will feel waking up with an excitement and passion that you haven't felt in years!

In order to make changes we must take baby steps - one step at a time, making healthy choices and decisions which will enable us to change the very situation or emotion which is keeping us stuck. We must also acknowledge that some choices may frighten us or that we feel fearful in trying something new. This is totally normal but in the words of Susan Jeffers – we must ‘Feel the Fear and do it anyway’!

I recently decided that I needed to take action to meet new people and feel more connected to those around me. Despite being a Life Coach, I often feel intimidated by new people and find it easy to ‘shrink’ into the background feeling nervous and shy. This had resulted in me turning down offers to go to new places with people that I did not know very well. I often just used the excuse that I was too busy as I was working on my new book.

So, for the past 30 days, I decided that I will take THREE radical action steps a day to change this pattern. My first action step was to make a commitment to myself that I would go up and talk to a complete stranger, at least once a day. Yes, it felt scary at first and I didn’t want to do it, but after a while I felt more comfortable and it was amazing how many wonderful new people I met!

My second commitment was to accept all social invitations that I received, regardless of how I felt about it. At first, it was so easy to come up with some excuse or justification on why I could not attend, but I acknowledged that if I wish to change me life, I needed to make new choices. So I pushed myself, held the hand of the fear I was feeling and forged ahead. Again, I felt empowered for taking responsibility and ended up having a fabulous time!

My final action step was to push myself out of my comfort zone and take more risks – even if I felt scared or nervous. I must admit, I really had to be courageous when often I felt like just sticking to my old habits. So, I pushed myself to try new things like indoor climbing and joining a new gym and it felt fantastic! I felt empowered!

It was amazing how doing these simple three action steps added to my energy, confidence and self esteem – and this was just after 30 days! I now feel fully confident in meeting new people and sparkle when I walk into a room!

So, my challenge for you all is to choose 3 actions that you could take over the next 30 days. Look at the area of your life which is causing you the most upset and decide to make some new powerful choices. These could be as simple as committing to meditating, doing affirmations or going for a short walk each day.

If it is an emotional issue, it may be as simple as praising yourself daily, encouraging yourself to do new things or speaking up assertively.

So take the next 30 mins to write down your 3 new power actions for the next month and go for it!! You deserve it!!!!

Remember, you can choose to ignore this and not take the action…..but you will be in exactly the same place and nothing will have changed!

Just how many months, years do you want to feel like this?
